I know when Miles was first hired, people hated the hire and thought we could do much better. The same kinda thing is going on for JJ. He's put together a good group of coaches that should recruit well. I think he might succeed like LM has. What yall think?

That's a pretty high bar. I think the football program has some built in advantages that the basketball team doesn't, regardless of the coach.

However, I am liking Johnny more and more everyday. We should know a lot more about a year, after his first season is over and his first full recruiting class is done. Lots of talent in Louisiana and DFW.

He absolutely could. He has already changed a ton of peoples minds since the hiring and with a couple good recruiting classes (I think he's already had one) he could be a stud coach for a long time... And we don't have to worry about him leaving LSU.

He can't be any worse than what LSU had.
If nothing else, he knows landscape and will recruit.

Was it the best LSU could have hired? No, you should be able to attract a sitting coach at a bigger school but the LSU job is not that attractive right now and what big name coach wants to come into the shadow of the football program.

The key for this hire is how well Jones can handle the X's and O's in the SEC. That will determine his future but just like Miles, he can address that with his staff. What was Trent's biggest issue, not X and O but hiring a staff that could recruit this area.

I think that's expecting way too much. No offense to Johnny Jones but I'm not sure he's the caliber of coach to have us in the discussion for the final four/E8 almost every year and national title hunt every few years. I do think he could turn us into what Dale Brown had for a while where we made the tournament every year and maybe make a final four once in a blue moon. We just aren't a caliber of program like a UK/KU/Duke/UNC...

Les has won a NC and played for another in a relatively short period of time. It will be difficult for Jones to match that kind of success IMO. I can see LSU making tournament runs in the future but also having off years.. In other words, Jones is more likely to emulate our current baseball program then football.

It's actually a pretty good comparison that I didn't consider, as long as you account for the inherent discrepancy in resources.

I'm hoping he'll be a Bruce Pearl type figure, spending his energy on building the excitement and recruiting. Except without the sanctions.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Johnny at a couple football games early on in the season.

no.

1. LSU football was already at a high point when Miles took over. Saban won the natty and ran off to Miami.

2. LSU basketball is an afterthought in national D-1 ball.
If Johnny Jones gets to the 2nd round in the NCAA's
it would be seen as a wonderful thing. 3rd round would be reason for celebration.

3. Louisiana high school football is premier. Louisiana high school basketball is nothing special.

4. LSU football is on the short list of MOST hs football kids east of the rockies and south of the Ohio river . LSU basketball is not on any rivals 5 star out of state hs players lists.

No because Trent Johnson wasn't the next Nick Saban.

I hope so.
I love LSU sports, and when everyone is back home for Christmas break and there is nothing to do in BR, it'll be awesome if the PMAC was rocking.
