talent, or lack there of than coaching.
Sure we didn't hit well. however, the revelation is we have no speed or power either.
You watched s.b. run down balls in the gaps, run down foul balls, go from first to third, steal bases, single into doubles, doubles into triples, infield dribblers into singles. Meanwhile s.b. could commit errors by dropping the ball and picking it up (several times) and still get our guys. When a ball was hit in the gap, our guys were 20 yards away.
Love all these kids for their heart. However, Rymes is a two hole d.h. Kats is left fielder, 3 hole guy. we don't have a center fielder, we don't have a true rt fielder, we don't have a true third baseman or first baseman.
When i look at this team, i'm not sure what more a hitting coach can do with this bunch. I don't see a k.g., eades, nola, goody type talent to work with like the pitching staff had.
I'm sure a good coach can improve jones, he has some tools to work with, maybe improve moore to some degree. Katz, rymes, fields, ross ect. they are what they are. you can't make them faster, you can make them hit for more power, and can't improve much in their averages.

We need more talent but we absolutely need a new hitting coach, our approach at the plate is appalling as we all saw this weekend. There is no way we can't upgrade from Javi.

I coached correctly you think that Katz could put up similar numbers to Carmona in the America East conference? I could buy that.

This, Katz chases way too many bad pitches and strikes out way too much. Also Jones is STILL after 2 fricking years unable to hit breaking balls. This kind of stuff goes on the hitting coach not teaching these guys proper technique.

Jones has to get better next year he has to figure it out or be told how to figure it out. He should be spraying shite around with power like Jankowski did this weekend. If he doesn't he is going to lose a lot of money.

well, if it's as easy as getting a hitting coach, then i'm sure lsu can pay more than stoney brook to get theirs!

It has to be something. Let's just compare JaCoby Jones and Carmona. Let me start by saying that MLB scouts are ridiculous......it talent is there they find it. I can't find anywhere on this world wide web that tells me that Carmona was drafted out of high school. Jones was drafted in the 19th round and would have been higher if he would have been thought to sign.
Now obviously MLB thinks Jones is more talented than Carmona......so what happened at LSU? not coached up would be the best I can come up with.

Who's fault is that?

I personally think Katz is a 3b at the college level he was a good one in high school. We need athletic outfielders that can actually run. Also just like another poster said our approach at the plate is god awful.

Who was our last competent leadoff hitter? At least since 2010 we have struggled mightily to find someone to fill this role.

Hey, its not the first time I've heard that it may be a talent problem. I don't actually disagree that we need to upgrade our talent.
But, do you mind telling me what our hitting philosophy is?

i can see that and that would be great. more speed in the out field, the better.
My point was, at least he has some mobility, however, he doesn't have that strong of an arm. You need a right fielder that can throw someone out at third, can run, and hit. we are trading fielding for average hitting.
i think him and rymes have the batting to stay in the line up, however, their fielding is average to below average. rymes could have never got to the ball the s.b. left fielder dropped on moore's foul in the first game. katz could have never got to the ball shot in the gap by nola last night. the s.b. righ fielder ran it down.

I think it's to work the pitchers, put runners in motion, and have the 3 and 4 hole hitters bring them in.
With that said, i'm not sayin javi is great. We moved nola into the leadoff because he appeared to be the only guy, maybe ryhmes, who has the "ability" to work a pitcher. With that said, neither have the speed to turn outs into hits.
lastly, you can coach a short balanced swing, foul off 50/50 pitches until the pitcher makes a mistake to get your pitch all you want. The player has to have the "ability" to do such a thing. i don't see jones, fields, edward, katz, hanover, ect having the ability to fight off pitches.
I just have a hard time understanding if it's coaching, then how can a hitter like rymes do what he did with this coach then a guy like fields do what he does coached by the same coach?
same with nola, he doesn't hit for the same average as rymes. however, he does have quality at bats. last night he didn't get a hit, however, fought to full counts and smoked some balls that s.b. ran down. Yet, katz can't lay off a ball at his eyes.

Stony Brook does not have a Hitting Coach. They have a coach that works with the hitters, as part of his other duties, such as Fielding Coach.

That's the sad part...Katz was recruited as an infielder not an outfielder, and Rhymes should be back at DH. But Hanover/Moore/Snikeris/Dozar are all less athletic than them, so by default we have to play Katz and Rhymes in the outfield in order to keep those other bats in the lineup.
Sad that we were so desperate for decent bats that we resorted to playing guys out of position and starting 4th year seniors who had never started before and were only playing because none of the younger guys stepped up.
We need more speed and athleticism.

Just like Javi. Hitting/3rd base/windmilling to obvious outs....

LSU looked like they were trying to hit a homerun on every swing. Every ball was hit high in the air, allowing SB to get under it. Where SB was hitting line drives in the gaps.

I agree. I said before the game, LSU needs to focus on driving the ball, not mammoth HR's

rhymes hit for average before he got to LSU, LSU coaching has little to do with his talent level vs. fields.
