re: 2 calls at second base today....

All I've been saying all day is that we should expect more from the officiating crew in a Super Regional. I never said the call at 2nd was incorrect or that it should be reversed.
The only thing I have asserted was that if the home plate umpire would have been doing his job correctly, then the play at 2nd would probably never have happened.
Some people have taken acception to my thoughts saying that "even if he would have made a call, no one would have heard him", "The home plate ump doesn't have to call ball four", or "Sniks should have known it was ball four and not slid". All of these arguments sidestep the fact that a good officiating crew would have never allowed the situation to develop the way it did.

Dude the 2nd base umpire was doing his job. The ball was thrown and no OBVIOUS call was made by homeplate umpire. Why are our fans such bitches when it comes to ump/refs calls? That out is all on Snickeris. End of story.
This...

Have you ever played baseball? I have never seen a ump yell ball 4. Get over it. Snickeris shouldn't have slid past the bag. Yeh the umpiring was bad BOTH ways. I saw 2 SB batters get called out on check swings that looked like they held up.
EXACTLY...I was amazed at the check swing calls, that always seemed to go against Stony Brook... i always hear the argument about "consistency" on strike zones, as varied as they are. But I've NEVER seem every check swing universally called a strike like I did today.
The LSU out at 2nd, technically, was a pickoff, AFTER he would have been called safe at 2nd. However, the call went the same weird way as the check swings. And yes, the ref DID seem to be staring for the runner's contact with the base more than usual. But whatever.
Stony Brook is a DAMN GOOD TEAM, capable of winning the SEC...YES, I said it.
Great hitting.
Great pitching.
Good fielding.
Great hitting.
Great hitting.
Let's hope their pitching depth is thin, even though I doubt is as they WON A REGIONAL!
We need bats.
Their coach's teeth look bad.

Since this has nothing to do with the OP I'll comment on it......You are dead wrong. They can beat us but no way in hell would they win the SEC.

That's the sign of a lazy ump and not something you want on the field when you are playing for your baseball lives.
Just another indication of the type of officiating we have been getting.

this ... this is the reason lsu is distracted and cant hit ... and it is distracting the umps as well .. which is why the HP ump didnt tell snikeris that he could walk on down to second base

I doubt SB's coach even gets dental coverage.
Posted on 6/9/12 at 11:41 pm to TigersRuleTheEarth
oh .. his dental is covered bro ... i think he got about eleven teen coats on there .. some turtle wax and whatever else you wanna put on that surface

FYI every appeal for help on a check swing is not at the directive of the catcher, umps will appeal when unsure.
I still think you're grasping at straws with the umps needing to be more demonstatuve on those calls. For one the catcher is throwing prior to the call bc if he doesn't he will never throw the runner out. On obvious balls you will see catcher raise up to throw and hold the ball bc he knows it's ball 4. This pitch must have been very close. Also I'm sure you have seen hit and runs fouled off and umps throwing up there arms for the runner and some times runner still slides. In this instance Snickeris would not have known it was a ball until he was 30 ft away from the bag. He likely would have had to slide or risk over running bag and getting tagged out. Bad base running not bad umpiring was what caused that out IMO.

Thanks for the backup on the coach's teeth and Turtle Wax...
As a dentist, may I say I am embarrassed at any member of my profession that placed those restorations on anyone that might come CLOSE to a nationally televised show...

lmao ... as a dentist .. so, when you see him trying to hold those bad boys behind his lip .. do you feel bad for him when he realizes the wont tuck up in there?
Posted on 6/9/12 at 11:52 pm to TigerLunatik
Maybe the umpire should have a remote and he can click different buttons that operate different colored strobe lights at each base to alert the runners of what he called the pitch
Posted on 6/9/12 at 11:54 pm to Topwater Trout
hell yeah .. or just get holograms over every base that displays the count, score and all that like on tv (its called the HUD) .. oh wait, then who would fans blame stuff on then?

Noted. Good thing there was no swing on this pitch, but if there would have been at least it would have forced the HP ump to make a call.

He was initially safe. I would say his baserunning was good enough. I think the ump that made the call was already in the process of calling Snik out and just couldn't help but get all into how he was going to signal the out. I'm sure he would have been very disappointed if he had to make a boring "safe" signal.
Posted on 6/9/12 at 11:56 pm to TigerLunatik
Or he could just say "ball four". I say try that before installing holograms.

the homer in me wanted to believe this, but i paused it and admit it could've gone either way.

something i havent seen anyone else say either is that the base was covered in mud and i can see where an ump is used to seeing the cleat up in the base .. and it on tv you could clearly see that there was mud b/w the cleat and base .. i wonder if that influenced the call at all
