Saw it at 6 tonight..
The beginning didnt confuse me it appeared to be an Engineer who took this poison in order for his DNA to be completely separated from himself and destroyed and then recombined in water to make a whole new strand/species. The engineer had to destroy himself and his DNA so that the new species would not be a clone of himself but a new varietal. It went in line with David saying you have to destroy in order to create.
David poisoning the guy kind of baffled me it didnt seem to serve his purpose.
Maybe the Engineers invited the humans to their planet as a way of deciding when they should be exterminated and replaced. When the crew entered the chamber with the vases they immediately started to change and prepare to be brought to Earth. If the engineer could pilot the ship by himself why was he in stasis? He could have left after they were all fleeing from whatever. I think he was waiting for humans. When he came out of stasis he was groggy like Shaw was but multiplied by 2000 years. When he came out of his illness he saw that humans had arrived and were now a threat to them and attacked. David said something along the lines that everyone wants to see their father die. Just like The gods destroyed the Titans humans would destroy the engineers and the engineers sought to keep that from happening.
Like every Ridley Scott Movie like this the answer is in the subtle details and Hollywood always cuts out those details for some reason and were left with a good movie. Then the Director's Cut comes out with a few small details added and it becomes an AMAZING movie. Scott always seems to get hamstrung by the studio then does what he wants in the directors cut thats what I am waiting for.
(sorry for the essay)

First off great movie. What bugged me with all this technology, when the first two people that died in the cave, you would think they could review the footage and see whay happened to them cuz it was coming loud amd clear on the ship. The storm was not effecting it anymore at that point. Not a huge thing but just bugged me.

And i didnt like how the chick didnt find out that david was the one that infected her mate.

Did anyone think that in the beginning the engineers where being visited by their engineers???? The ship shown in the beginning was a different ship that what they had, so maybe it was someone else's ship.... Just a thought

I think Shaw and David will find the Engineers' homeworld and release their own weapon on them. This will fulfill the children killing their parents and give an opportunity to link to the events of Alien better.

Ultimately it was pretty disappointing, but my expectations were probably way too high. I still like it I guess, but it's below the original 3 (4 never happened as far as I'm concerned)
Disappointed as well, hated the E.T. music. Enjoyed Fassbender though.

I might get killed for saying this but IMO the visuals in this movie rivaled those of Avatar. It's definitely the most aesthetically pleasing movie since Avatar.

The black goo was a weaponised version of the life creating technology. Designed to create the Alien.
Where as in the past, like the opening of the film. The bio-goo was used to seed planets. Which took a gigantic length of time. With evolution ect. To create Engineer like creatures. Humans or whatever.
This newer weaponised version. Took life, mutated it, incorporated it and made the desired outcome, the Alien in a much shorter time. It was using life, not building it.
However it wasn't just a seed. It needed to get the right genetic material to make the creature. Male and Female or maybe just female.
It's steps.
So when it infects worms, it turns into a vicious creature, looking for the next host. For DNA from that to incorporate. It gets a guy, and then turns him into a vicious mutation to try and find the missing genetic material.
When Holloway was infected, through having sex the bio goo got access to the full genetic make up it needed. We can assume infected sperm fertilized an ovum and then. What does it do. It goes about creating the next step.
Which is the squid baby. It creates an organism which is capable of laying the alien egg, fetus inside another creature.
Possibly the whole goal is to use the reproductive system of a female to create that next stage. We know she was actually pregnant as it had an umbilical cord.
So yeah, i hope this makes sense.
The squid baby was the final creature the goo needed to lay the egg for a complete alien.
What we saw were different ends. It mutating creatures and trying to find material. And basically a direct link. Guy gets infected with goo. Bangs a chick. Boom steps complete. When otherwise it make take many infected creatures to get the same results.

I really hope there's a sequel to explain some of this. I really hope there's a sequel to explain some of this.
I think it's pretty much guaranteed. This film opened up the universe and raised more questions. They have a lot to work with, which may result in a new series of films.

They certainly have a big world.
And lots of interesting questions.
But there's only 1 human and 1 android head left as characters.

I agree, It would almost be a repeat of the Star Wars prequels (although not nearly as bad) where I would bascially HAVE to go see it even though I know I am going to be disappointed

One thing we can all take away from this movie is that they have set themselves up to make another movie. The directors managed to leave enough questions out there to justify another movie. Relating this to the Star Wars prequels is spot on.
In the next movie, expect Shaw and David to crash on LV-426 (the Engineer's home) with the black goo. Expect David to play a major role in getting the Engineers infected, and it will end with a creature bursting out of an Engineer's chest.
Overall, this movie was just ok, but obvious a setup movie to peak our interests and curiosity.

The opening seen looks like it took place on Earth. If you stick to the movie's angle, that the Engineers created humans and the quote about you must first destroy in order to create ( or something like that), you can assume that mankind was created when the Engineer took a sip of the black goo and fell into the water.
What doesn't add up is how there was a 100% DNA match if his DNA was ultimately broken down, then rebuilds in the water?

but I still fail to see a real motive
I saw his motive as wanting to create life "because [he] can." It seemed clear to me because he asked why humans would create androids before he decided to infect Holloway's drink.

WOuld be kind of hard to explain how they evolved into another species so quickly
Perhaps they develop faster? Shaw was '3 months pregnant' when she had only had sex 10 hours ago. Also, the being she gave birth to had matured enough to be a huge "face hugger" in the matter of a day (?).

Agree big time. The scenic shots during the opening were beautiful. The design of all the technology was amazing. I love the 'boxy' look over the slick futuristic aesthetic.

I just realized this but the difference in timeline between Promethus and Alien (I think someone said 34 years?) is smaller than the difference between Alien ans Aliens (which was clearly stated to be 57 years).

This is where you lost me. You're actually quite wrong here. Scott maintains to this day that he never wanted to make a director's cut of Alien as he thought his original version was "perfect". He only did the director's cut as a courtesy to Fox and in honor of the film's 20th anniversary (he only added like 3 mins of film). Scott still says that the original theatrical version of Alien is his preferred cut of the film.

Alien ended with 1 human and a cat, still made a sequel to that.
