Question: which is greater? champions league, or english premier league? Champions league champions >>>>>>>>>>> 4th place EPL.

Eta: I am neither a Chelsea nor Tottenham supporter.

The real salt in the wound will come this summer when Chelsea buys Luka Modric.

Exactly the bigger impact this has isn't that they won't play in the UCL but he fact that they may lose key players and be at a disadvantage when it comes to FAs.

Last time I checked, that wasn't a rule in the NFL. In your argument, wouldn't it be more like give the regular season champ the trophy because they earned it?

this is not the same at all. I think like 72 teams start off in this competition vs what, 12?

12 of 32.... The percentages are probably similar

You're right, it's not a rule. Because America in general understands how the word fair applies to sports

So "fair" means the champion of this particular league not getting the opportunity to defend its title? I mean .. in America teams get the chance to do that every season. You're failing to acknowledge that the Champions League is a separate entity from the Premier League, La Liga, etc. It makes the rules at it pleases and teams abide as they're presented.

ETA: Spurs have themselves to blame for that extended run of shite form they had

Chelsea had it's chance... and finished 6th.. I'm not sure what's hard to understand there.

Chelsea's win had a pretty terrible effect on Americans aspiring to play at the top level. Friedel loses out on his last chance at the champions league and Kljestan and anderlecht get bumped out of the group stages

Personally, I think it's a terrible rule. If you want to put chelsea back in because they won it I think that's fair but why not put them in the 3rd qualifying round and let spurs keep the place that they earned.

Pretty easy to understand to me.

Chelsea also had "its chance" and won the whole thing.

When the season started this was in place, down the stretch the rule was in place. Tottenham knew the rule, finish 3rd and you don't have to worry about anything else...they didn't.

It sucks for them and they should be disappointed that doesn't mean they should bitch about it but ;that's the rule. Now if this were announced at the end of the season, bumping them out then it would be a legit gripe.

Don't play for 4tyh, play for 3rd, period.

They were in the thick of the title race ... and had a terrible run that had it not been for front loading those points, you wouldn't even be complaining about their being "wronged."

Play for third. And as for the Americans, yeah that kind of sucks ... but it happens every year. We don't need to be going all Captain America for clubs that aren't, yanno, American.

All these Chelsea fans would be raising holy hell if it happened to them. I don't even like Spurs, the point is that the rule is bad. Stop being such homers.

Liverpool fan here ... and rules is rules. I do sort of think Chelsea has the right to defend its UCL title, but hey, MAYBE I'M JUST WILD AND CRAZY.
