All these Chelsea fans would be raising holy hell if it happened to them. I don't even like Spurs, the point is that the rule is bad. Stop being such homers.

I would be sad/disappointed. No doubt it would suck, but every rule that works against you a specific year does not necessarily makes it a terrible rule.

The funny thing is we have known about this rule for AT MINIMUM 2 months. No one cared at first because there was no way we were going to flip the tie against Napoli, then we "cheated" to beat Benfica, then Barca was going to kill us, then No WAY you beat Bayern in Munich. So someone please convince me that Chelsea doesn't "deserve" Champions League next year.

For the record, I'm automatically ignoring Chelsea fans arguments in this discussion, as well as tottenham.. because both of them aren't far enough removed from it to be unbiased.

It's a very silly rule, it allows a team to concentrate 100% on the CL and get lucky and be presented in the next year while ignoring their league form.

League table doesn't lie, tournaments do.

They won't be able to. Just let them b*tch and moan for the next couple months and once the Europa league starts, hopefully they will be engaged by then.

They should have a poll to decide who gets in, like the BCS. It's the only fair way to do it.

Good post. This pretty much sums up my feelings as well. Although I think it's a good rule of thumb to automatically ignore all Chelsea fans arguments in general. Bho is an exception obviously. Also, I'm not so familiar with patch but he seems ok

Meh, that's a little harsh. it's not like the Spurs finished first, second or even third......they finished 4th. Chelsea finished 6th but won the CL.

I can't see where one is more impressive than the other. The rules were esablished and well known. Quit being dramatic.

Great point. League table is much more indicative of quality, if you're looking for the better team it's hard to argue against the Spurs.

Do you follow college football...?

I think this is very "fair." a champion should have a right to defend their title as should the champion of various league have the right to challenge the current title holder and champions of other leagues.
How is this in anyway unfair. finish in the top three you get a guaranteed birth. seems pretty simple.

So Alabama should be one of the teams automatically in the bcs next year? These two statements don't jive at all.

American football (or all American sports) makes for a bad comparison because CL qualification is about the best teams from the previous year; something completely foreign to all American sports.

So.. What about teams who were the best two years prior?

Additionally, college basketball/ baseball are very similar. bubble teams get bumped out every year because there is too many teams from one conference and a mediocre team won the conference tournament. The only difference is the Campions league has actual definitions to its reason.

Golf tournaments are even greater favoritism to winners. You are invited for several years after winning a major no matter how much you suck. To defend you title of the tournament.

I am not a fan of Chelsea at all. I dont like torres or rich Russians and think john Terry( and his brother) are huge pieces of shite.

But its the right call.

Not to mention, if it's from how well you played in the previous year, which is the requirement for 71 of the teams; why does one team get a pass while playing poorly in the same year the other teams were required to perform well in?

The tournament that team got invited to is over, they won. Does the winner of the euros and/or world cup get an auto invite? (I honestly don't know)
