How do I make my grass grow slower?

I have extremely thick St. Aug and if it rains that week it shoots up like wildfire.
It will go from 3.5" when I cut it to 7" over the period of a week. I just want it to slow the hell down because it holds water when it is that long and I have a hard time chopping it down.

Cut it lower and lower each time

Primo, it aint cheap but helps
You may need to look into dethatching it. There are some rotary mower blades that can do this. Will be ugly for a few weeks but would come back strong.

There is a chemical for st Augustine you can use that slows the growth. Yard dude puts it down so I'm not sure of the name. Catch is, ya gotta keep your yard watered and fertilized properly because if it starts to die because of a lack of water or fert....your yard is fricked for the year because if the slow growth.

Honestly the only place it doesn't grow is where I piss and where my dog pisses. Last year I had a bunch in bonfires in one spot and it is already full of grass. It will swallow a beer bottle in a couple of months. I can't cut it lower or it will brown over and die. I am just looking for some chemicals or something to slowthe stuff down.
As far as the thatch goes, wouldn't de-thatching make it grow faster?

Dethatching will make it healthier. Not nessasarily grow faster. And it will allow you to cut shorter.
Just try a small spot and see how it works. When I get home I'll see if I can find the blades and link it for you.
You can check into primo but it's expensive. Will slow down growth.

If I would use the dethatching blades on my thick st. Aug lawn, would my yard have a clean cut look to it or would it tear my yard up.

It will look like shite for a few weeks. But will look better once it heals up.

I thought a de-thatcher was just a big rake that you pulled behind a mower? How do the blades get into the actual thatch? Does it have little raking teeth on the blade?

This is a verticutter for a golf course
You may be able to rent something like this
Or get something like this for a push mower,
Now for St Aug I would just try a small spot and see how it does. St Aug has stolons, or horizontal growing stems on top of the ground. If you verti-cut too aggressive it could do some damage and make for a long recovery. I've never verti-cut st aug but it does wonders on bermuda.
Also you could try scalping it down once(cut at an extremely low height). Maybe worth a shot. And I would never fertilize St Aug with very much Nitrogen............ever.
And those rake looking things you drag with a mower are crap. They may work if you pass over your yard 100 times with it.

I would dilute some roundup and spray it on the lawn. I have a friend that does this because he hates to mow his lawn.
