What factor made our football team a national power so quickly

I know some will say coaching, but I'm going with the money factor. Seems like the more money you throw at something, the better it gets over time. Hats off to the decision makers that were willing to pay our football coaches top 5 money. Alot easier now to get great coaches here at LSU Also, the money being poured in makes our team very attractive to recruits coming in on visits from other states seeing the upgrades to our athletic facilities. I just wish they would add more seating to the stadium so we could have the largest stadium in all of college football.

Unless it's a ground war in the Middle East.

Money got the coaches, coaches got the recruits.

Bringing the magic back obviously. We didn't have magic before; now we do.

#1, far and away, even above the coaching (and I am not shy about giving Saban credit for reviving and building our current program), it was that La. produces some of the very best football players per capita in the entire nation, with almost no recruiting pressure from within the state. When Saban arrived, the program was in disarray, but the cupboard was FAR from bare. Hell, we had three QB's on the team who would spend some rather significant time cashing NFL checks. I'd have taken any of them last year! Not to mention some stellar LB's, DB's, a Belitnikoff winner. You get the idea. The talent was largely there when Saban arrived and he knew what to do with it. Put it this way: LSU won the SEC in 2001, Saban's 2nd year. Miles won the SEC and NC in 2007, his third year. If Miles won 2007 titles with Saban's players, then Saban damn sure won the 2001 SEC title with Saban's players.
Basically, LSU has (relatively) easily tapped reserves of talent and should always be good if the program is well managed. Therefore, when Saban arrived, the results came quickly, and Miles kept it going.

Yea the money got Saban. Also too, Saban became more attractive of a coach during his time here at LSU. Saban was not the greatest coach before he came here. LSU made Saban alot of money. Saban convinced LSU to spend more money on the facilities and build new.

Money & Facilities! Money helps hire top coaches & facilities helps recruit.

It's more than money. If it was just money UT, A&M, Mich, UCLA and Cal would be in the top 5 every year. A&M is a top 10 money school and they have never been able to hire a top 10 coach for some reason. Firing their AD last week was a good start. The guy had no stroke.

Thought the facilities were approved under Dinardo, they just came to fruition under Saban so he gets all the credit.

I agree. Keeping the LA high school blue chip players here, and not heading to Florida State, Michigan, etc.
This started with Dinardo/Kevin Faulk, and was obviously enhanced by Saban.

You would be betting on the wrong horse.
Examples of schools who spend money on a coach without getting results can be found in all sports as can examples of schools with less budget being a big winner cause of the HC.
1st you need the HC and then you need the money to become an elite program and remain one over time. imo
This idea that our HS talent lets us just throw 11 guys out there and we gonna win

Mark Emmert.
I will go with the triumvirate of Mark Emmert, Skip Bertman, and Nick Saban.
Nick Saban wanted facility upgrades and better salaries for his assistants.
Mark Emmert said lets do it and decided to create a system to put money into the athletic budget(for all sports really).
Skip Bertman fell on the sword and became the bad guy in most peoples eyes by instituting the Tradition Fund.
