Apparently, this is not possible.

It is a confusing article to say the least. From what I gather someone claimed to be a girl named Sarah Phillips, based upon a real person most likely an acquaintance. The fake Sarah Phillips blew up on covers and then got an offer from ESPN, at which point it appears someone else began to portray Sarah, possibly the real Sarah. Then it all began to unravel. Now its the big story on Deadspin. Proving that no matter how good of an imposter you think you are online, someone will catch you the one time you slip.

the fact that somebody can do this to those lengths is pretty amazing, though. i mean the OT outs fakers all the time before they become prime time posters, let alone get writing deals with national publications

Yea, no doubt it is pretty incredible that it reached the heights that it did.
ETA: Who was that guy on shaggybevo that was hugely outed? Dr. Drunkstein or something? He had a name over here as well.

I bet 4chan could have all of this figured out by midnight.

I've now read all the updates and re-read the original and I'm fascinated by this.

That's really what I'm referring to. Now look at this with the context of the alleged wire tapping scandal...

What helped this girl/person was that apparently 2 people involved.
Either her father or husband started at Covers with her name and once it took off was able to convince "Sarah" to join in. At least that's my theory.
If the people involved hadnt gotten greedy and tried to start their own site and trying to scam other people out of creative content, they probably could have gotten away with being a freelancer for ESPN.com for awhile.
I bet LSUfreak was next on the list for getting an offer
Someone at ESPN is losing their job over this, besides "Sarah" that is.

Oh, it just gets better.

The connection was made by Deadspin from Sarah Phillips (@SarahPhilli) to a popular Willy Wonka parody account, Condescending Wonka (@OhWonka) after a reader tip that the two accounts had briefly sent out the same tweet before they were deleted. As if this all wasn't crazy enough, Not Bill Walton (@NotBillWalton) entered the fray with Direct Messages from both Phillips and Wonka saying that she controlled both accounts.

That was a dig at Clay Travis.

Before I scrolled down a couple threads I did a search on this board for Sarah Phillips.
No results were found. There is no such thing as Sarah Phillips.

What's not to understand? This 'Sarah Phillips' person, guy or girl, is a con artist and scammed a 19 year old college kid out of a popular facebook, stole thousands of dollars from a guy (and also threatened to have LAPD beat him up and scammed ESPN into hiring he/she.
Only thing no one really knows is whether Sarah Phillips is real and just has a personality disorder or if someone is controlling it underground and this Sarah girl is just the face.
Either way,

The whole thing is kind of amazing that someone could get away with this in this age
of social media.
of social media.

I think this age of social media is exactly why and how someone could get away with this. The mainstream media today is a joke because they've allowed social media to be a major conduit.

What is interesting is when I was trying to explain this story to my roommates it was almost impossible to tell. Mostly because it really is a non story. I mean it just really is not a big deal to the average person. But to people like us it is completely fascinating how someone could do all of this stuff and no one ever see her. She just sounds like a scam artist who happens to be in to sports.

but this story has nothing to do with social media, really
she got a following on covers.com
covers.com allowed her to write a piece. it was popular. ESPN.com (NOT the network ESPN) noticed and signed her to a freelance deal
where does social media come into play?
when did Page2 on ESPN.com become "mainstream media" ?
