Is Bill Simmons the only good sportswriter left?

I used to like Michael Silver but he has fallen off the wagon recently.
Bill Simmons not only knows his stuff in a variety of sports, but also is a world-class comedian. I worry for the future of sports journalism.

I'm more worried that you think that Bill Simmons is a good sportswriter.
I used to like him, but he's really more of a pop culture writer.

Poz
LeBatard(granted it's 90% South Florida sports related nowadays)
Whitlock
There's a whole lot more than just the popular guy out there.

No
He's just one of the only respectable ones left at the place with the biggest platform
There are good writers out there, they're just tougher to find than Simmons because they aren't at ESPN

Bill Simmons is a terrible writer. Ironically enough Grantland is home to several good writers (notably Jay Caspian King and Bill Barnwell).

he "knows his stuff" with regards to the NBA alone and amateur karate in California in the mid 80s

Simmons was kind of cool before he got famous. I loved when he was up and coming and comparing sports to Swingers or Rounders, but it gets old when you don't care about his pop culture references. Grantland is OK, but the fake separation to give Simmons his independence from ESPN is laughable. The only solid journalism seems like it is being done at Yahoo and guys like Bruce Feldman who left ESPN. I'm not a big Deadspin guy, but at least it is some counterweight/check on ESPN stupidity.

I think the people saying he isn't good are just saying that because he is popular.

Henry Abbott also does a really, really good job breaking down the NBA on the True Hoops section of ESPN.com

I think a lot of schlubs could write like Simmons.
1) Pick a topic.
2) Take a slightly controversial but not altogether unbelievable stance
3) Argue the stance by dropping 80s pop culture references that are semi-comical at best
4) Rinse, lather, repeat
Anyways, this is a much better summary of why he sucks:
