Wife and I are heading to the city this weekend and are looking to avoid tourist traps. Any local suggestions I could tell the cab driver to stop at would be greatly appreciated.

a search will turn up a lot of great options. This board as a whole does not really recommend many tourist traps.
but if you want better info, a price point and type of food you are looking for would help

"Non-Tourist Trap" meaning something only the locals enjoy. Back Alley hole in the wall joints are welcome.

I'd add Brigtsen's, Dante's Kitchen, Atchafalaya.

With the internet and iphones, tourists are widening thier horizons

You guys forgot Landry's, bubba gump, and acme oyster house. 3 classics IMO.

Exactly my thoughts. The whole concept of tourist traps is losing its relevance due to technology. You're still going to have people from out of town go to Commander's Palace because it's a New Orleans institution. But lots of locals go there as well.
Same goes for Cochon. There's always a ton of out-of-towners there. NOLA residents too.
Good food is good food. Throwing around the term "tourist trap" is lazy. And most quasi-intelligent tourists have gotten better at surmising what's worth the price and what's not based on word of mouth, looking at the menu and online reviews.

First time I went there years ago I had the best jambalaya of my life. Also walked right in the door on a Saturday afternoon and sat down with no problem.
Now every time I walk or drive by there's a line out the door. Looks like the word is out.

That line in front of Acme Oyster House suggests otherwise, along with the schmoes eating breakfast at Brennan's.

Atchafalaya for sure. Go there. Cochon as well.
Clancy's. Patois.
We have great Vietnamese food, too.

I was just about to mention coops, my favorite hole in the wall in the french quarter. If there is a line just get a drink from next door.
