That's all you really need when you're the Red Sox or Yankees I think. You can acquire the star power through other means. It obviously helps to be developing star power (especially pitching) but I don't think it's really necessary when you're in that position.

They have a SS for the Red Sox ranked 58th which isn't bad. Both him and Profar are 19 years old but Profar is ranked 51 spots higher. So, while prospects aren't guaranteed, it is nice to have someone ranked so high that there wont be an outcry when Kinsler is moved, unless he does terrible.

They have Xander Bogaerts ranked there. And they have this to say about him, An Aruba native, Bogaerts apparently is Papiamento for "jaw-dropping, precocious power."

The Rangers have sent the precedence of moving guys around when they started doing that with Young...so they will do that if they think it helps the team.

This. Andrus is a Scott Boras client and his clients ALWAYS go free agency after their contracts expire.

He came in the Teixeira trade (which was awesome) so why not send him out that way and really stock up the farm system?

But on the original story, congrats to Ian (my g/f's favorite player).

My thinking as well. Everything I've read about Profar suggests he is a younger, more athletic version of Andrus.

With this extension, Andrus is going to be the odd man out. The Rangers only gave him an extension to go through arbitration, and they more then likely don't want to lose him in free agency to the Yankees. But, there is a chance he moves to 2nd. He does seem to genuinely love every teammate and loves Texas, so who knows.

Andrus has way more range and is the superior athlete, Profar will probably be the superior offensive player.

This is what fan graphs said about him.

quote:

On defense, Profar wasn’t challenged in game action, but showed picturesque fluidity and movement in batting practice and pre-game infield. Additionally, Profar’s arm is at least well-above average, if not plus for the position allowing him to pivot off his back foot and fire lasers across the infield. The one area which may cause him to fall just short of “gold glove potential” at shortstop is his slightly above average foot speed, but Profar’s feel for the game and baseball IQ are present in all areas should only improve with additional time on the infield. If the foot speed winds up limiting his range a touch, his instincts and ability to position himself may make up the difference and then some.

So, while you are right his range might be limited, they said everything else will negate his range. Full article here.

Yeah everything else is great, I just wanted to correct the guy that said he was more athletic than Elvis (which would be crazy fast if true).

I wouldn't say more athletic, but Profar does have the bigger frame, which should lead to more power. Profar may be a better 2nd basemen, so it is possible he could start there, but he supposedly is fairly adamant about SS. Basically, the Rangers have a logjam at SS and 2nd with two of the best fielding infielders in the game and one of the highest rated infielders in the minors. So lets just say I am not worried at all about the infield for the next 5 years.
