LSU home games - are you there for the football or the party? (Vote Now)

Few years ago we were at my tailgate with a few friends who are female and this drunk chick stumbled under our tent because it was raining. After a few moments, she asked, "So...y'all goin' to the game?" One of my female friends looked her dead in the eye and said, "Yes...that's where they play the football." Drunk chick didn't quite get the joke.

Likewise, I go for the football. All the other stuff is white noise to the real event as far as I'm concerned.

They play it on the tv too. Sounds like the joke was on your friend.

This is a false choice. Almost as bad as the false choice LSU is pushing on fans: you can tailgate all day and night only if you are a season ticket holder. I don't like tying on-campus parking with season ticket holder status. LSU football is slipping out of reach for a lot of fans. We shouldn't jack up parking fees just 'cuz the market can bear it. There's gotta be a better way to make the game-day experience available to our fans, even those without season tix.

Sort of, but it's no where near the same. On TV you only see what the game's director in the van wants you to see. You're limited. You get no sense of what's REALLY going on in the stadium...the flow of the game. Unless it's specifically pointed out, you have no clue if a DB is getting beat and will soon get toasted, etc. Sure...you'll know the score at the end of the game but it won't be anywhere near the same.

Take the Auburn game from 2001 as an example. Being at that game was like being involved in a near soccer riot the whole time. Tiger stadium was down right mean the entire time, and the feeling of winning the west when it finally happened for the first time could have only been fully realized being there.

The game is the point of the entire endeavor...at least for me. Otherwise, I'd hang out around my house with a group of close friends, save the trip to BR and pass on the giant assed traffic jam.

Why are the X's and O's of the game more important than hanging out with friends and family?
They aren't. It's about being there, in the stadium, watching warmups, hearing the band, cheering our asses off, singing the alma mater afterward, etc. It's about having the LSU Tiger Stadium experience with my family and friends.

I didn't do any tailgating at all last year. Usually grilled something at my house (1 mile from campus), drank a few beers, showered, sipped a whiskey on the walk to campus, found a ticket, walked around to a few friends tailgates for 1-2 hours to say hello, and walked into the game an hour or so before kickoff. I actually enjoyed this a lot more than doing the typical all day tailgate. Obviously it would be different if I couldn't walk to the game.

Eh, I see a hell of a lot more when watching on tv.

I miss out on a ton of the on field stuff when I am at the game. Started using a radio to listen to the game while in the stadium, but on tv it's better.

I feel much more informed when watching on tv. Give me up to the second stats, injuries, sideline reporting and replays. Multiple views and line of scrimmage sight. When a close play happens and I am at the stadium I end up calling a friend to find out what happened.

When I lived close to campus, I would spend the day tailgating then watch the game at a bar/restaurant.

Now that I don't live in Louisiana, I go to the game when I come in. Only because I refuse to drive that far to go sit in a bar.

I agree you see and hear a hell of a lot more watching on TV, but that doesn't make it more fun than actually being in Tiger Stadium. Maybe it's because I'm so far away and don't get in very often anymore, but I can't imagine being in the city, having access to a ticket, and not going to the game. Even when I was in BR, my girlfriend and I were usually the first and last students in the Greek section, watching warmups and staying through the alma mater.

Well, people here keep saying it's about the game. The football itself. Yet I see more about the football when watching on tv. So, which is it?

I have more fun when I am informed.

I have more fun when I am there. "The game" isn't necessarily "the football itself." I can get all the extraneous stuff (X&O matchups, injury reports, in-depth analysis) when I get home and rewatch it on DVR. Plus if I really need to know why somebody isn't in there or whether a call is likely to be overturned on replay, there is almost always some middle-aged dude relatively close listening to the game on the radio on his giant headphones or a buddy texting me from back home or something.

this is a dumb thread.

at 7:00, people are there for football.

at noon? what do you think people are there for?

I think it was a very good question and if you read the responses, you are getting some pretty honest answers.

A pretty large contingent of the tailgaters are only there for the tailgate and given the option...would rather watch the game at home.

I completely disagree. I want to watch the game itself.

without football, there is no tailgate.

Without football, all your doing is going to a picnic.

and for those who go out to live it up and dont go to the game or leave at halftime, then your nothing more than a picnic goer.
