Do you need to be more athletic to play 2nd base or 3rd?

Explain.

I've played both. I feel you need to be more athletic to play second because you honestly have more range to cover and you have more responsibility in bunt coverage and you need quick feet for the ability to turn a double play. However, I also think you need better reaction time be at third because the ball seems to come at you at a faster clip than other infield positions not counting the pitcher. JMO

2nd basemen seem to be more athletic as a whole, but 3rd is the more difficult position to play.
2nd basemen have to cover more ground, but 3rd has to have better reflexes and a very good arm.

2nd is more difficult and you will see better fielders there

2nd IMO because you have to cover more ground.
Better have a quick glove if you're playing third though. They get some rockets over there.

This. I played both. 3B is a much more intense position mentally. You have to say to yourself on every pitch "line drive gonna short me". If you don't, then when it comes you get eaten up. 2B is more relaxed. Even if a line drive comes you just block it, pick it up and make the short throw to first.

So having a quick glove is not athletic? Many baseball players are fast, but far less have a great glove.

Probably second, because you have to cover ground in both directions, whereas at 3B, you have to only go to your left (mostly).
2B historically is also a "defense first" type of position. Not until recently, really, have 2B really put up monster offensive numbers.

No having a quick glove does not equate to being athletic. U can have a quick glove and be a poor 2nd baseman bc u have no range/good feet etc.

Better question. Do you have to be more athletic to play SS over 2nd?
I say yes, Way more ground to cover plus a longer throw.

Everyone thinks speed only when talking about athletic ability. Maybe 2nd is more athletic but I value having a good glove and consider that athletic.

In the 80s Bill James wrote that there is a defensive continuum:
SS
2b
3b
CF
RF
LF
1b
(Catcher is a special case)
Players inevitably move down the cotinuum as their skills erode. Moving up the continuum is very rare and seldom successful.

Overall 3rd. Most 2nd baseman are guys who don't have the arm strength to play SS.
At 3rd you have piss rockets hit at you and have a long throw across the diamond, however, there is limited amounts of distance one must cover.
At 2nd you normally are able to play deeper because you have so much more time to make the toss over to 1st. Yes they have more range to cover but that's the only thing more athletic about the position.
I know I perfer a hoss at 3rd, then a good 2nd baseman.

This. SS and CF require the most athleticism. Catcher is the toughest position to play

It's not necessarily more athletic but different skills. 2nd basemen need quicker feet and 3rd basemen need quick reflexes/hands and stronger arm.

Well, there aren't very many Miguel Cabreras roaming around 2B.

2nd because the guys who play 2nd in MLB are more athletic than the guys who play 3rd.
