I left midway through the movie and went to dinner.

What an abortion of a movie. Turned it off an hour in. Anyone feel the same? Had so much potential but looked as if it was directed and written by a fifth grader. And the acting??? woof...
You're aware you're watching a comic book action movie right? I'd rank them as follows..
Batman movies.
First Class
Iron Man movies
Captain America
Spiderman 1-2
X-men movies
Thor
Hulk
Spider man 3
Superman

kind of unfair to lump x1 and 2 with x3, which was just as bad as spidey3.
id have a hard time picking between x2 and iron man

Hey it was the 20s and 30s ... then there was Stan Lee.

As far as comic films goes, DC/WB/Nolan has set the bar and it's really high.
Christopher Nolan doesn't make comic book movies.
And the Batman movies have been the only ones from DC inspired properties that have been good.

It's not an abortion like you think it is. But it's not oscar worthy IMO. It did what it was supposed to accomplish which was tell the origin story and be a primer to the Avengers.
It's a decent flick for when you need to kill some time.

Did you not read the full post?
Also does make comic book films? Then what is Batman? And of course Batman is the only ones that have been good, other than The Green Lantern there hasn't been anything else made recently.
Lastly here's something to go along with "Nolan doesn't make comic book movies."

On March 10, 2010, Nolan confirmed that he and David Goyer have been working on an idea for a Superman film. Nolan says, "He basically told me, 'I have this thought about how you would approach Superman.' I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way… A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways. I only know the way that has worked for us that’s what I know how to do." Although Zack Snyder is directing,[28] Nolan will have significant creative input in the process.[21]

X-men: First Class has substance. Avengers looks like it will go as follows:
You have no basis for this and are going into the movie biased so you'll probably come out of it the same. Maybe it will be what you say...but give it a chance at least before casting judgment.

I actually thought it started off good, but after about the hour point, it just went down hill and fast!

I'm working with Joe Johnston as we speak ... I'll be sure to tell him that some of the guys on the movie board thinks his movie is an abortion.
that said, i still haven't seen it.

Yeah I agree.
I liked Captain America cause it captured that feel good pro-American vibe that director Joe Johnston had previously going on in films like The Rocketeer & October Sky.
I really reminded me of The Rocketeer in a lot of ways and that's a good thing.
It wasn't supposed to be some dark brooding drama it was mean to be a more light hearted feel good action adventure and I think that's just what it was.
Tell him my thoughts on it instead.

He would like that better ... he is kind of intimidating, but overall pretty nice.

I'm sure Freaux will speak for himself, but I don't think he was saying Nolan doesn't make movies with comic book characters in them. He was saying he makes a legitimate movie, as based in real life as he can make it, and it happens to have a comic character in it.
TDK's story would have worked as a straight up crime genre, but it had Batman in it too.

What do you consider recent?
Superman Returns
Watchmen
Jonah Hex
Are all in the last 5-6 years or so.

I'll give you these two. But again before Nolan was given the production keys to DCU.
As for The Watchmen. It was published through Vertigo. (I know it's own by DC, I'm just trying to play around. ) But to me to Ultimate Cut of The Watchmen was done very well as far as the comics go. Snyder's team changed the ending to make it a little more believable than "aliens."
And if this is the point you were making.

Then I agree, but I think that's something that everybody understands but Batman is still a comic book character. That's why in the credits it say "based on the comic book character created by Bob Cane."

I liked it okay overall but it was lacking some substance. I'd recommend it if options are limited.

See that's just it though it wasn't supposed to be substantive or weighty. It's not a serious drama it's generic and formulaic but for me it's a formula that works very well for what the movie is trying to achieve.

Exactly.
It was supposed to be a little cheesy and goofy.

This. There is a large chasm of difference between Batman and Captain America interpretations.
Therefore, Nolan hasn't really "set a bar" for Comic Book Movies, because he doesn't make them.
Captain America does a better job pulling from its roots than Batman does. Fact. That's taking NOTHING away from Nolan's Batman series, which is great on its own terms. In the excellent and focused translation of Batman, Nolan has both lost and gained some things from the original, or even later, versions of Batman.
Both are excellent interpretations, but Batman is as far removed from "comic book" as Captain America is from "gritty reality."
