On the one hand, I understand that Drew is trying to maximize his earnings because this is likely his last contract and the career of a pro player doesn't last near as long as the average person's career does.

On the other hand, Drew wanted $23MM per year. There were reports that we were $5MM apart so we were offering 18 a year. 18 motherfricking million per year isn't good enough? Say what you will but that seems like greed to me. I'm a bit disappointed that Drew seems to be putting his money lust before the Saints ability to field a complete team.

i will almost completely agree with this, BUT he does have a great OL in front of him (3 pro bowlers), an above average receiving corps, good running backs, and one of the best tight ends in the league.

Drew makes all of them so much better, but if not for the surrounding cast, he struggles like every other QB.

HES getting Brady and Manning money what more does he want,I love Drew but they gave him a great deal and paid along side the 2 best Qbs in the game and that is not good enough for the man who claims he wanted a contract that would hold the team together but instead it looks like he will be the one to break this team up.

As usual, most people would probably be better off waiting til all is said and done before formulating opinions like this.

he wasnt denying their offer as a low ball offer. He wanted more money in the front 3 years than the later part of the contract. you have to understand this guy is not invincible and can possibly get hurt so why not try to get something guaranteed just in case. whos to say three years from now the saints dont decide that he is no longer in their plans and decide to trade or release him...look at the brett favre saga at the end. I doubt Brees wants something like that on his hands with hardly no money to show for it for his last years. (Be advised I am in no way saying I want this to happen or that it will..so chill out ahead of time)

These threads are making me el oh el.

Has he been underpaid. Yes.

Does he deserve a big contract? Yes.

Did the Peyton thing scare every single big money athlete in the NFL? Yes.

I don't understand how you guys keep saying he should take less money and that you lost respect. He's an athlete, not Capt. America. Its a business. Are you going to take less money so Joe in Accounting can keep his job? Hell no.

I would take less money if I truly valued the contribution of others players (Colston, Nicks, etc) that also need to be re-signed. What good is it to have great quarterback if you don't have a great team? The offense is what it is because it has been a consistent unit for the most part. You want to throw that away just to have the highest paid quarterback?

Especially when you know Joe is not really going to lose his job, just move to a different division.

Nobody is losing a job because of Drew Brees.

You want him to take less money than he's owed because... what exactly? Would if have helped the team if Tom Brady took a smaller contract... wait a second, he's getting paid how much Drew should AND they have tons of cap room AND they were just in a fricking SB. Maybe you should be complaining that non-elite players are getting paid too much?

And the point of this business is to win. He has certainly earned his stripes and earned the money, but in this case 'the money' isn't what's in the best interest of the team. I'm not talking about taking a pay cut so Joe in Accounting can keep his job. I'm talking about taking a pay cut so the team can get better, or at least be as good.

If only we could get all these players playing for like one dollar a year, our cap money would be overflowing!

For some owners; however, the ultimate point of this business is to make money. Drew Brees makes your franchise tons of money, so you pay him tons of money to do it.

Why don't those players take a pay cut to play with him?

What happens if Brees re-injures his shoulder and can't throw the football anymore and only gets a fraction of his "team based" contract? It's a team game, but you better believe Drew is looking out for himself (as well as his agent looking out for himself). As others have said, he's been severely underpaid based on his play. We're lucky he hasn't held out before now. This falls more on the FO than Brees, we should have locked him up after the 09 season.

So how do you think colts fans feel right now? Do you think they agree with mannings contract and that it was greedy or best for both sides? In 2 years you will feel differently. I love drew but he is asking for a little too much.

I don't see how an educated person who knows how's to handle finances can say they need 24 mill instead of 18. He has already made enough money for him and his kids and grand kids to be set for the rest of their lives plus money he has made in endorsements. How much more do you need and is 5 mil that big of a difference when you have so money already. Is really worth losing key pieces in the offense and gaining new pieces on defense.

Colts fans were ecstatic because he only matched how much Brady was making.

Let him go get his money then. If you don't pay him, someone certainly will.

I'm going to try out a new argument. Taking less money than you can hurts your teammates too.

Drew, with his nice guy image and catchy smile, not to mention his baby producing vigor, doesn't take as much as he should.

Fans will now expect every single Saints player to do the same, because dammit Drew did it, and he makes the most while being the best player in the franchise history. This will lead to many shitty negotiations, because fans will not understand the market, and will run players out of town.

Or this one.

WHAT THE HELL IS CAUSING ALL THE COMMUNISTS TO COME OUT OF THE WOODWORK? ITS AMERICA! MAKE YOUR MONEY!
