No. 79-80 was better. All those guys were a year older. They should have won it all that year... and I know that they would have, if Scales hadn't gotten himself disqualified for agent-talking.

Plus... even though we lost both Greens after 78-79, the 79-80 team had Howard Carter, who had a great freshman year.

How is the team that won 31 games not considered the best team?

I was there. I must be getting real old cause few seem to remember that era. Scales was as exciting as any player I've seen at LSU. And I saw Pete.

Folks who were around then know that LSU deserves the best. And can be real good in hoops.

It took legends like Darrell Griffith, Magic Johnson, Jason Kidd and Isiah Thomas to stop the Tigers.

NCAA or bust!

If you want to stick with your two dimensional thinking, fine. But the 1979-80 team was a better team than 80-81.

Why? ...Scales, Scales, Scales.

That guy was a holy terror. If he had been with the team for the 1980 NCAA tournament, we would have won it all. If he had stayed for his senior season, LSU would have been mind-blowing in 80-81.

Those were high-water mark teams for sure! 79-80 was more fun, but 1981 was was amazing.

Not sure where you are getting your revisionist history but Scales was suspended during the 1979 NCAA tournament and did not play vs Michigan State. He was in the lineup when the Tigers lost to Darrel Griffith and Louisville.

Rumor has it that Macklin was freaked playing his hometown school and his buddy Darrel Griffith whom he had never beaten which caused a confrontation in the dressing room with Scales prior to the game. Don't know if valid but very possible. Astronaut had gone off in teh 1980 SEC tourney a couple weeks before and carried Tigers to their only SEC tourney crown.

Good Lord. My bad. My twisted memory had Scales out of the 1980 tournament.

Those were great years. How in the world did Dale Brown pull in the likes of Rudy Macklin (KY), DeWayne Scales (TX?), Greg Cook (NY) and Willie Sims (NY)?

1980-1981 team was better than '78-'79. SEC was down big time in '79. Kentucky who had won the NC the year before had to replace about the whole team except Kyle Macy. Vanderbilt was the only team to be ranked besides LSU during the conference season and they fell apart down the stretch. Then in the first year of the SEC tournament renewal Scales decides to show off his passing skills for an agent and UK humiliates LSU much worse than the final margin.

'79 was very good, but they don't hold a candle to '81. Sort of like saying the 2001 football team was better than the 2003 one.

The best team was the 80-81 final four team by far; in fact, we were the best team in the country that year, but didnt win--reasons why is a thread for another time. The previous year's team with Scales was great and dwayne was a great player, but he was only concerned about himself and I think that hurt them come tournament time.
The 80-81 team is one of the best college teams I have seen in my lifetime.

Those were good times

I was watching the preview for Man in the glass (the Dale brown story) the other day and it reminded me about that song. Took me a little while but I found it haha
