It was a turrible statement on my part. The whole Thornton/Morgan comparison was not to credit or discredit Johnson's recruiting; simply stating that if we had a really good SG the sky would be our limit.

Ok I got you.

I agree. However, there is no way Alleva is:

A. Making demands on Trent Johnson during the season.
B. Talking publicly about demands he may place on Trent Johnson.
B. Talking about them to Jordy.

I agree. But it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't tell him he has to step it up on the recruiting level and he will provide some means to make that an easier proposition by way of a local coach.

That's it Tiger. You know, one of those performance based deals. Sort of like those jobs where you have goals you set and then at the end of the year your boss does an evaluation and if you don't meet goal a or b what is the next step. I know TJ didn't have the outcome of the last few seasons as his goals.

So what did your decision come down to? Boy George, YMCA, or George Michael. All tough decisions.

Actually it was between George Takei and Tiger Assthority.

I could post on here all day with Tiger Authority. You really take the time to get to know those you're posting with. Hopefully one day I too will have nearly 17,000 good post/threads like you've always made so I can finally call myself a true LSU fan as opposed to troll.

I think he gets 2 more years. If we had landed Gathers I'd really be behind him.

He gets players that stay for multiple years, he coaches defense very very well, and he recruits solid people/leaders for his team.

I think that is a recipe for constant success once he has another year or two. That's the kind of coaching that leads to consistent tournament birth and a nice run every 4 or 5 years.

He just needs to keep busting his tail recruiting this year. These LA high school teams have some young talent coming up here soon and he can't be slacking. He needs to recruit these HS coaches/AAU coaches as much as he recruits the players.

Not that it's likely, but I'm not ruling out the possibility that he changes his mind (again) and signs with LSU if they keep up this nice run to end the season. It's happened before.

when is the deadline for basketball recruiting? is there a "national signing day?" how does that work?

There's not a national signing day in the sense of the football one, but there is a date when you can actually start sending in LoI. This year it falls on April 18th if wikipedia is right (I didn't know the date off hand). So players can't actually sign until then, don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting Gathers to sign here, but not ruling it out either

No. We should fire TJ after our next loss. We're going to be terrible for the foreseeable future. TJ cannot lead us out of this vacuum he's created.

We're only scheduled to return every starter next year and four of five starters the following year from a team that has a legitimate chance to finish 4th overall in the SEC.

If LSU fails to make the NCAA Tourney at the end of the season do you start looking for a new coach? Even if he makes the NIT.

Just wait... If LSU drops another game this year, this place will end up in full melt down mode again

Here is the problem.

No one cares if he stays or goes. Apathy has set in. I know the core fans (about 3-4K) plus the 1k student section mega geeks care, but those 4-5k still go to the game and aren't going to clammor for him to stay or go. The fans that have given up on the program don't give a shite.

It is a recipe for this type of cycle: losing season, NIT, losing season, NCAA, NIT, losing season, losing season, NIT.

Just enough for Trent to keep his job forever.

Oh so you mean like what we've had for 20 year or so? Hell the last 20 years weren't even that good overall. Apathy will be overcome, but building a real program at a place like LSU takes more than 2-3 years.

ive never been a fan of a coaching caroousell, but with the money that lsu athletics brings in they got to do something if they dont think trent can get it done. And its really not up to the fans other than just not showing up and they will change it.

He makes it through this season. I've basically given up on TJ and the constant excuses made by his supporters about needing more time, but this year he's gonna get us to 17-20 wins.

NEXT year is big for him- we have to have turned the corner, so to speak. Another regression, and I'd not be shocked to see him gone in midseason.

Remember Coach K at Duke had a 38-47 record his first three years after inheriting a well-established program from Bill Foster (1978 NCAA runner-up to KY). Coach K did not get to the NCAA until his FOURTH season and finished 7th in the ACC in his third season.

Amazing note on Coach K at Duke (see my post above) is that his last season at Army his team went:

9-17

And Duke hired him and stuck with him.

Every coach with a shitty record should be kept indefinitely because if you're patient he'll eventually be successful.

And I'm in favor of keeping Trent Johnson. I just think this argument is invalid and is too often trotted out by those who would apologize for an underachieving coach. For every coach who started out shitty and got better, there are at least ten who started out shitty and stayed that way.

Johnson is finally getting the program how he wants it. I think we need to give him 3 more seasons before we start considering firing him.

Three more seasons would take us through the end of his seventh year. Nobody in coaching gets seven years to prove themselves any more. Even four or five is becoming a thing of the past. If you want to succeed in coaching in the modern era, you have to show tangible and significant progress in a maximum of four years. If we were headed to 2-14 or 3-13 in the SEC again this year, TJ might actually be in trouble. As it is, he's shown enough progress (from rock bottom to middle of the pack) that he'll get another year, but not three, unless the next two continue to demonstrate significant progress over where we are now.
