I would say that Jim Taylor and Steve Van Buren both had better careers - both are enshrined at Canton...

And this could make me 100% wrong but I'll still take Faulk.

but Cannon does have the hardware like someone said earlier

And he was a championship RB in the AFL and an all star at TE in the AFL.

wiki:
quote:

Cannon, at halfback, scored an 88-yard touchdown on a pass from George Blanda in the first AFL Championship game, a 24-16 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. He scored the only touchdown in the Oilers’ repeat victory over the San Diego Chargers in the second-ever AFL Championship game.
Cannon amassed 2,043 all-purpose yards in 1961, and led the league in rushing. He played for the Oilers from 1960 through 1963 and went to the Oakland Raiders in 1964. Al Davis converted him to tight end during the 1964 season, and he finished his career as one of the best players of all time at that position. Cannon was All-League in 1961 and played in the AFL All-Star Game as a halfback in 1961. He was an AFL All-League selection at tight end in 1967, when he scored 10 receiving touchdowns. He played tight end in the in 1969 AFL All-Star Game. He accounted for a total of 64 touchdowns in his career, 47 of them receiving. For his career, he amassed 3,656 yards receiving, 2,455 yards rushing, and 1,882 return yards for a combined total of 8,003 yards and 63 touchdowns. He also passed for 46 yards and one touchdown. He played in a total of six AFL Championship games, winning twice with the Oilers and once with the Raiders.
Billy Cannon is one of 20 players who played the entire ten years of the American Football League's existence. He is also one of 14 players to score 5+ touchdowns in one game, and also holds the Oilers/Titans franchise record for most points (30) and most touchdowns (5) in a single game.

I had him #4, ahead of Dalton Hilliard. Does that equate to "0" love, as you say?

Those who remember when Dalton burst upon the scene remember what a joy it was to see a back of that quality playing for LSU. I remember seeing him leave 3 FSU defenders flat footed on a cut back. I remember the rain of oranges when he scored a TD. I remember him leaving Bowden with a stunned expression knowing that there was nothing he could do to stop him.

Cannon, Faulk and Hilliard

I could make a good argument for each. Personally liked Faulk the best but I wouldn't be hurt if Hilliard or Cannon got the nod.

I see these three as top tier.

Cecil Collins was the most talented, JV had a great Freshman year but never regained that form (or weight). Charles Alexander deserves consideration too.

There is no best!

The top 4

Alexander
Cannon
Hillard
Faulk

Taylor played 2 years, Van Buren played 1 at HB, the rest of his time was at blocking back.

Stovall was a very good all around player, not a great rb. He played both ways and was the punter also.

Alexander with Faulk's line would have put up much better numbers, LSU' line was little even for the mid 70's in the SEC.

Hillard had nice line to play behind.

Cannon played for a avg SEC line during his time at LSU.

Van Buren had the worst line to play behind in 43, but all teams were hurting because of the War.

Alexander could have rushed for over 400 yards in a game at least twice and was pulled many times when LSU got ahead. One game he was pulled at the end of the first quarter, Mac never believed in running up the score and in games like the 77-0 Rice game he started to throw because Rice could not stop the run.

It's good to read the arguements for and against you guy's picks here. Lsu has been so fortunate to have some of the guys we're arguing about. For what it's worth, I think the best RB in school history was Jordan Jefferson. I'll do it myself, don't bother...

90% of the guys listed above Stovall is laughable. 2nd in the Heisman voting and 2 mentions in an 8 page thread.

No doubt that Stovall was as good a top 5 choice as any other.

Sheesh, Collins was a freak but doesn't have the resume.

True, but his "One Game" performance against Auburn was probably the all-time single game
running back highlight in L.S.U. football history.

For what it's worth, of all the players mentioned, I'd say Dalton needed a good line the least. He absolutely was going to make the 1st guy miss, and usually the next two or 3. I'll say it again- he had the best moves of any player, including Barry Sanders, of anyone I've ever seen. About the only thing he lacked was breakaway speed, or he could have probably got an additional 1000 yds rushing in his career. But then, it's tough to be fast when you have tree stumps for thighs.

The Diesel for sure, hell he went to jail got out and still was able to land a contract with a pro team. Amazing talent and bat shite crazy, could have been the best.

With that said its between Faulk and Cannon.
