I am not too concerned with the look of the gun. Just trying to stop the rust.

then something like gunkote is the way to go. still gonna want to bead blast the old finish off if you can.

If that's all you're concerned with... you can just hit it with a bit of paint. (Maybe some naval jelly first to get the rust off.)
