Can we talk about Field of Dreams for a second?
I felt it was a very unique movie, and could have been a perfect movie, but it had some impurities that kept it from being that. Some moments were astounding while others fell flat.
The PTA (Paul Thomas Anderson...wait) meeting, for instance. Didn't like that. I liked the mystery of the field and the divine commands though. There were just some minor things that kept it from being something perfect.
ET on the other hand is a perfect movie.

Surprised at some of the omissions so far. My list will definitely include Coming to America (probable #1), The Last Emperor, and Planes Trains and Automobiles.

There are just so many movies.
And nostalgia has to play a role in the list.

I could make a top 20 with my omissions. And Coming to America is #21 for me and still might find its way back on

Oh and as for Field of Dreams, I don't know if this help with your problems or not but it is based on a book (Shoeless Joe). But it is a book I haven't read so I can't use those points to help you out.

Yeah. I'm facing a similar problem. I'm trying to decide if I need to have two separate entries for Bloodsport and Kickboxer or if I can just combine them into one entry like Bloodboxer or Kicksport.

Field of Dreams is eliminated for turning Joe Jackson into a right handed hitter.

I start an Unoffical Top 25 All Nostalgia list thread this morning. But it flopped cause people couldn't read. Probably on the 3rd page by now.

This is a fantastic thread! I was born in 1979 so my childhood consisted of 80s movies....how I loved the 80s.
1. National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
2. The Outsiders (1983)
3. The Goonies (1985)
4. Airplane! (1980) - "I take my coffee black, like my men."
5. Weird Science (1985) - still to this day, one of my favorite movies
6. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1985)
7. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
8. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
9. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
10. War of Roses (1989) - It's even funnier now that I'm older & married
11. The Breakfast Club (1985)
12. Heathers (1989) - "Well f#%k me gently with a chainsaw"
13. Stand By Me (1986)
14. The Shining (1980)
15. The Great Outdoors (1988)
16. Die Hard (1988)

PS - No ET for me, I think I watched it like 5 times as a kid. Also, I forgot Short Circuit and War Games!

we need to expand the voting to 40 for this decade, imo

I agree - even to 30. Top 20 movies of a decade with Spielberg & Hughes is hard.

There were so many movies I desperately wanted to include but couldn't:
Omissions: hope some people include them in their list:
Beverly Hill's Cop
Always
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Lucas
About Last Night
Red Dawn
The Color of Money
The Fly
Good Morning Vietnam

I had about 40 of them typed out, started deleting them, accidentally cut out four too many, added a couple back in, thought of one of my favorite actors that wasn't included, did an IMDb on him to see when the movie I liked released, remembered a similar movie and added those two that weren't in the original forty.
I started out with more action movies and ended up changing to more dramatic ones. I kept coming up with movies that I would rather watch if they were available to me right now.
I thought about doing a second list of the movies that were my favorites during the 80's since that's how my list started. Damn, I didn't save my original 40.

On all these lists I start out with the movies I own then work to movies I've seen the most then work to movies I really liked.
I figured that if I liked a movie that would be the order in which I would seem to appreciate it.
From that list I just put it into a 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, and 16-20 listing. That was the easy part. After that I ordered each of the five. Swapped tiers with a few.
