I'm looking to add a policy for my wife. Any recomendations on places to request quotes?
Any rule of thumb as to how much coverage I should be looking for? She currently brings in about 30-35% of household income.

Dont just get a quote. Sit down with an experienced rep at a reputable company. Life insurance is not something to just guess at

Any suggestions/recommendations on companies?

What cbtullis said. You don't just want amount of coverage for the cheapest price. You want to make sure that 1. the company will be there when you need them and 2. it will hopefully be hassel free when the time comes.
The big companies like New York Life, Northwestern Mutual, Mass mutual are definitely ones to think about. Met Life is probably a step below those. If you have a policy on yourself and are happy with the company/agent and they have performed well over the years, definitely talk to them as well.
The most important thing with LI is to find an agent you trust and can get along with who is with a company that is financially strong and you know they will be able to pay a claim if an unfortunate even happens.

Definitely go with what has been said. Sit down with someone from the big 3 companies listed and actually find the right amount of coverage for your wife. Life Insurance shouldn't be like finding a body shop to take a dent out of a car. Just getting quotes won't really solve your problem.
Good Luck

Agree with GoCrazy Auburn.
Nothwestern Mutual, NYlife, Metlife in that order.
Mass mutual is good as well.
I'd stay away from Primerica, AllState and State Farm
Primerica is too expensive and way too many people come and go.
Allstate and State Farm are best in the business for auto, home, etc. Not so much for life. It's just not there strength

Thanks for the replies.
My life insureance is through my employer, so I will probably be looking to add a policy for myself as well.
I'll check out the companies mentioned.

I would also suggest going with a Mutual company for the reason of they aren't looking to please their stockholders. The owner of mutual companies are the policy owners. JMO.

All around this is probably the best LI advice thread that I've seen since being on here. Usually there is horrible information given but I would listen to everything said in here

Luckily it hasn't divulged into bickering over WL and term amongst people with a lot of incorrect "facts".

Use this calculator LINK
1. How much will be needed at death to meet immediate obligations?
2. How much future income is needed to sustain the household?

Not a bad calculator. Never seen it before. Similar questions asked during the process I take my clients through. I'd still recommend talking to someone in person but this is pretty nice

get online quotes - arm yourself with information and rates--THEN sit down with an agent and discuss
KEEP in mind that agents are selling first to make commission- second to meet your needs
Keep them honest
Oh and remember some of the responses on this board are from agents

Definitely do this. Having your a large portion of your life insurance through your employer is a bad bad idea.
If you lose your job around the same time you become uninsurable your family could be screwed.

your best buy will not be through your employer

You say that like its a bad thing. Have we given one bit of bad advice yet or tried to sell him anything?

Bad agents yes. If you are talking to the right people, that should never be the case. (I realize it happens all the time though)

No saying agents are from the devil just that good procurement of any product involves knowledge and negotiation
I for one do not want to trust everything an agent tells me. I fully understand they have to make a living-
Some people are naive enough to believe their agent will always tell them what is best for them
