I think it is as it will draw the casual viewer into watching game and generate more interest. I am not sure UCLA has a lot of value anymore. But, I think having IU, Michigan, Louisville, and UK all ranked gives people a sense of order being restored.

it might draw more people in Indiana to watch. but no impact outside of that. casual viewers dont know who is ranked

I kind of disagree there. Because IU is a "name" in CBB and anytime they can get shown it generates more interest, especially from the 30-50 crowd (myself included). But I do agree with you about the casual fan not caring about rankings.

I, for one, am happy IU is ranked. I enjoy watching them play and their fans. This is what college hoops is about.

I think the OP means just having them "be good again.". I've never understood how IU could have such a stretch of mediocrity. There is no excuse for it at a program with their history in a hoops crazy state. Despite all their titles and Wooden, etc. UCLA doesn't have the aura of Indiana basketball.

I'm young enough to never remember a time when IU was at an elite level. So I don't really care either way.

I get what you are saying, but if the team in South Bend, IN was ranked in the Top 5. That would have a greater impact on the casual viewer.

Completely disagree (see last year when ND was top 5). ND's doesn't have a big impact in buzz in basketball, even when good. It gets good support from the students and some of the football fans, but not all of the subway alumni, and definitely not casual sports fans who aren't ND fans, like IU basketball does. They generate national buzz.

I think it's a good thing for teams like Indiana to be highly ranked. The prestige creates great matchups, whether it be "heavyweight bouts" or "David vs. Goliath" upsets.

In Big Ten country you are right. But outside of that area, Notre Dame would draw in more of the casual fans. Love them or hate them everyone has an opinion/feelings about Notre Dame.

Bobby Knight is gone and most of the casual sports fans have no idea who the head coach of either team is.

They were in the Final Four in 2002. Are you 9?

yeah they were a low seeded fluke... elite in basketball has little to do with the tournament and more to do with what seed you were

A low seeded fluke is VCU or George Mason. A 5 seed making the Final Four isn't a yearly occurance but it's not a fluke.
