Had 3 in my backyard bushes this morning in Laffy. Got me to thinking that I rarely see them in huntable numbers anymore. You guys?

I'd rank em right up there with teal as for as eating goes.

When I was knee high to a bullfrog, my dad would come home with a paper bag full of woodcock.
They're a rare sight for me.

we had some for lunch today.....
last 3 hunts...
pushed up 10,13 and 8 respectively...
still here in huntable numbers... and then some...
location location location....
lots of em end up very safe in or near deer food plots.. and with deer season as long as it is now... they mudbats don't get pressured in those places..
a few places that used to have a lot don't...... habitat changes...

All I know is that those things keep asking to get shot flying right over me when I'm standing in a beaver pond waiting on ducks at daylight.

Saw a few dozen deer hunting few weeks ago. Never ate one but the old timers say they tasty.

with that being said though.. numbers are nothing like glory days of 70s and 80s... nothing... I remember hunts pushing up 40 to 50 woodcock.. and 3 -4 coveys of quail....
I hunt hard.. and my hounds and the folks I hunt with all have world class dogs.... and I have found a total of about 50 wild quail in the past 5 years.... and 20 were in one spot in one hunt and have not seen any there since...
the death of quail hunting here... cut woodcock hunter numbers mightily here... especially when woodcock limits dropped and seasons shortened.. when we used to get to hunt till mid feb.. those 15 days were out of this world.... now.... we cant hunt past jan 31.. and IMHO.. the two weeks open in december are mostly useless..
compared to most places.. south central la has some of the best wood cock hunting..

I've killed many. Probably 3 of them were legal.

I think the change of farming habits and the disappearance of farming in certain areas and the corresponding increased in forestry has hurt quails more.

so a woodcock is pretty much a snipe that likes really thick cover?

Just becuz I like the hard stuff does NOT make me slutty.
What intrigues me is that YOU were thinking about it.
