Not a gamer...Need advice on what to buy for my 7 year old

Right now he's playing the Wii, but he wants something "cooler" like an XBox but I have no idea what I'm looking for or what to buy.
Is there some other gaming system that I should look at? What doe I need to compare and how much am I looking at spending??

PS3 has bluray which is awesome because it plays new HD movies. I prefer the 360 for gaming though. The controller for ps3 is a bit smaller at least it feels it so something to think about as well. They each have their pros and cons.

Maybe an X-box with a Kinect?
Seems to be a fair number of kid friendly games with that combo

I would say the Xbox 360 for a kid that young. JMO
My little cousin (10yr old) and all his friends roll with the Xbox 360 console.
Teens and up seem pretty divided on the two.

Pretty good bundle for him AND you.
This would be plenty for him, and if you ever got into gaming, you would probably need to upgrade the size of the hard drive.
Getting a PS3 for the blu ray player as well is a good idea too, but I don't know much about the Move. Reviews are mixed from what I've heard.

you may want to find out what his friends play.
half the fun of a gaming console nowadays is playing with your friends.

The most important thing you need to know is the game ratings.
E - suitable for everyone
T - suitable for teens (13+) (usually do to violence, profanity, other things associated with that type of action)
M - suitable for 17+ (games consist of nudity, strong sexual content, violence, drug references, profanity, gore, etc.) These types of games, parents love to play, but really shouldn't subject their kids to.
At the end of the day, all of the "cool" games are T and M rated. You won't find many "cool" games that are rated E unless they are sports games. For your 7 year old, I recommend the Kinect, and start him off with some of the lego games.
Also, another friendly reminder. If the game is rated E, that does not mean that online play will be E as well. There are A TON of people who play online who are the "internet tough guys." Racism runs wild online as well as profanity.

Playing ANY online game for a 7 year old is a bad idea. Avoid that community as long as possible.

Do not buy MW3 for your kid.
