The loss of rivalries

I don't see why everyone is so shaken up by the potential loss of rivalries. New rivalries will develop and the sport will go on.
When the Texas schools merged with the Big 8 in 1994 to form the Big 12, the Oklahoma-Nebraska rivalry was forced to discontinue and that was one of the greatest rivalries in all of college football. Up until the 00s with the reemergence of both Texas and Oklahoma as college football powers, I would have argued that OU-NU was a bigger rivalry than OU-UT.
The game will go on with or without the old rivalries.

honestly, when I was growing up, I didn't even know about the Texas/OU game being that big...I only knew it was a big game once I moved to Dallas in 1997.
I do remember the Nebraska/OU game being on TV as a kid and remember it being a big game.
LSU and A&M will become a big rivalry again, and Arkansas/A&M will become even bigger than now.

It's a matter of opinion.
While having decades-old, if not a century-old, rivalry is wonderful, having one which has develops organically instead of being forced can be wonderful as well.
Just look at LSU's current rivalries.
LSU-Auburn was a very infrequent series before 1992, Earthquake Game aside. Once 1992 rolled around, that rivalry significantly developed due to memorable games, be it Jamie Howard throwing the game away in the Hallman years (1994?), LSU beating #5 Auburn in 1995 in the "Bring Back The Magic" season, the "barn burner" in Auburn, the cigar game, the 2001 game rescheduled due to 9/11 for the SEC West title, etc.
LSU-Florida has similarly developed from an every-year game to a major rivalry with national title implications in the 2000s.
LSU-Arky has had some organic development, especially when the game had implications for bowls, the SEC West title, and the national title, but a lot of that is astroturfed by the schools and the league to make it seem like a bigger rivalry than it is.

If A&M doesn't get to schedule Texas on Thanksgiving weekend, I would love to see the LSU-A&M rivalry renewed on that weekend. I would like to see the Arkansas game moved up. Sometimes it is just too damn cold in Little Rock for the game and the drive from BR sucks.

I doubt the TX-OU game goes away. It was an out-of-conference game for many decades anyway, and city of Dallas or Jerry J. will throw money at it to keep it in Dallas.
A&M-Texas may turn into an every 4 years or so game though. Texas probably won't schedule A&M and OU every year out-of-conference. Hoping UT goes to the Pac-16 and keeps the aggie game, among other reasons.

I don't necessarily agree with the OP. LSU-Arkie hasn't set the world on fire and only the Arkie's make a real big deal out of it.
The B1G tried to force Penn State and MSU and it didn't take off.

RRS is the only rivalry from the Big 12 I care about.
Nebraska vs OU and Nebraska vs CU were great rivalries but I think most Nebraska fans are happy to have traded those games for the B1G.

Rivalries tend to develop for two reasons. One reason is on proximity, and the other is based on playing games of consequence. When you combine both the rivalries can be extra intense. LSU's problem is that we don't have any rival based on proximity. So any rivalry must be based on games of consequence. And the problem with the SEC West has been that the games of highest consequence have rotated among the members.
A true rivalry game is one in which a victory can turn a dismal season into an acceptable one. I can't see Texas A&M rising to that level for LSU.

Agree.......to an extent. Remember, Texas A&M ran Fran out of town on a rail mere moments after he beat texas for the 2nd straight year.
I would love to see the rivalry with LSU rekindled--got a taste of that during the lead up to the Cotton Bowl last year--but it will be a while time before that game replaces the hate A&M has had for texas over the years. And I hardly expect LSU to view A&M as their premier rival for a long time, either.
