Pac-12 CEOs don’t want to expand

"Here’s the latest, based on weekend conversations with sources from several conferences and numerous schools":
Why the SEC is expanding:
Big 12 woes beyond A&M:
Big 10:

quote:
The Pac-12 presidents and chancellors do not want to expand. They want the status quo for as long as they can get it.
The CEOs believe the Pac-12 is the best-positioned conference in the country. They don’t want 16 teams, and they don’t want the SEC and Big Ten going to 16 teams, either.
The conference has stability… it has a football championship game … it has the richest TV deal in college sports history … and it has a wholly-owned network(s) to serve its fans, provide unprecedented exposure for its athletes, promote the league’s academic mission — and generate millions of dollars per school annually once it attains maximum distribution.
But...
If Texas A&M becomes the SEC’s 13th team, that sets the superconferences in motion.
“The SEC won’t stop at 13, or even 14. And if the SEC is at 14 or 16, the Big Ten will do it,” a source said. ”At that point, (the Pac-12) would be crazy not to entertain the idea of expansion.”
Why the SEC is expanding:
quote:
The conference cannot renegotiate its long-term deals with CBS and ESPN without membership change, and in order to get maximum value, it needs 16 teams.
From Gainesville to Knoxville to Baton Rouge, and all points along the way, the feeling among SEC athletic directors can be summed up like this:
“We’ve won five consecutive national titles and the Pac-12 has a richer TV deal than we do. What’s the hell’s going on?”
Big 12 woes beyond A&M:
quote:
At the root of Big 12 destabilization is not Texas A&M’s departure — that’s hardly a death blow — but the deteriorating relationship between Texas and Oklahoma.
“Their bond has frayed,” a source said. “Texas overplayed its hand …
“Oklahoma wants into the Pac-12 with or without Texas. The partnership is no longer sacrosanct.”
Big 10:
quote:
The Big Ten won’t expand until it’s time to renegotiate the league’s deals with CBS and ESPN, which expire in 2016, according to a source.

The Pac 12 deal fricked everything up.

bullshite. If Oklahoma or Texas wanted in, the Pac 12 would accomidate.

if only we had a board for these topics...

They wouldn't seek them out if there was stability and no A&M threat of rocking the boat. They don't need them to make more money than everyone else.

Sources said that at least five schools (Stanford, Cal, USC, UCLA and Washington) have serious questions about admitting the Oklahoma schools, which are not members of the Association of American Universities.

SEC presidents had the same verdict a couple months ago before Aggy gave BXII their 2 weeks notice

The SEC should be given the best of everything right now. They continue to win championships and dominate in bowl games.

The money correlates to markets and exposure and not who is hoisting the Crystal Ball.
SEC football is still more regional than the Big 10 which has always had a Northeast following as well as the Midwest. Pac 12 covers more of the country geographically.

the PAC12 has a richer deal ONLY because it was put in place after the SEC's.. to think it has anything to do with markets is crazy.. especially considering the PAC12 fan excuse of little interest in football, and more to do out west as a reason why games are poorly attended..
what will you say when the SEC renegotiates its deal, and its the richest deal?

+1
The Southern region of the US, is the most populous region in the United States, and if Texas is included, it isn't even close (by 35 to 40 million or so people). If it is total population in the market that is important, not just a relatively few big city markets, the SEC will end up with the richest contract when the contracts are next renegotiated.

If the SEC created their own network, then they wouldn't have to worry about negotiating a huge deal with ESPN as much as they would directly get most of the profits. I think we see an SEC network in the near future.

i'd also say more people nationally follow the SEC than any other conference, due to the quality of the teams. surely that has to count for something?

The East Coast is the most populous region in the country. The SEC should create its own network. The SEC network would be huge. Pac-12 might not actually expand. They won't increase in money much and they already have a good deal. Makes sense to stay at 12.

Only if the Pac-12 could rework its deal which they wont do until the SEC and maybe even the Big 10(+2) rework their deals.

After adding Utah and CU, the Pac12 better expand. That was really a bad move considering no one else was added and those two really make the conference weaker, not stronger IMO

No, people follow teams they are fans of. There are more people from the MW dispursed around the country than from the South.

going from 10-12 gets you a lucrative CCG and a bigger TV contract, how exactly is that a "bad" move that makes them weaker? You guys really got to get past the quality of last year's football team when looking at this stuff.

That is literally one of the dumbest statements all day. You are basing the past five years on the entire future of college football? The SEC is not too relatively strong academically or in basketball, which is traditionally the easiest sport to make money in because of its relatively low costs.

So we should give TV contracts based on who the smartest school is? How much profit do schools actually make off of basketball? Compare that to football. Football is the one sport that pays for everything else. Few schools have other sports that can hold their heads above water(ex: LSU Baseball).
