burning the redshirt- a question

I know, playing in a game doesn't automatically eliminate your shot at redshirting (you can still mysteriously pull your left ear or something, and get a year back).
But given our depth at RB, AND Stampley playing well at FB, did we really have to use Hilliard on one fullback handoff late in the game? Not challenging Les on player management, but that was curious. Is he that good that he would leave after 3 years anyway, and now does he need to get "hurt" to be redshirted?
TIA to the experts on the current rules

quote:yes... the only way he can redshirt now is if he is granted a medical redshirt.
and now does he need to get "hurt" to be redshirted?
And those are given out like candy.

Yes it does.

That would be a medical hardship, I believe.

I think redshirting is overrated in alot of situations. Especially now with the war on oversigning and forced attrition going on

Pretty sure you can play a certain number of snaps early in the season before conference play starts and still receive a normal redshirt.

It's still a medical redshirt but they're given out for pretty weak injuries. Now one cannot play all the way to the Arky game and then go down with an injury and still get a med redshirt.

A special case involves the eligibility of a player who loses the majority of a season to injury. Popularly known as a medical redshirt, a hardship waiver may be granted an athlete who appears in fewer than 30% of his or her team's competitions (with none coming after the midway point of the season), then suffers a season-ending injury. A player who is granted such a waiver is treated for the purposes of their eligibility as though he or she had not competed in that season.

my opinion - they are going to play him because he is much better than what they have - he has played running back , can catch the ball out of the backfield, he needs to learn the the routes, blocking, and away we go- been a while since we had a fb like hester

This was changed a few years back. Doesn't work like this anymore.

No way, no how, false, untrue, inaccurate.

quote:Thanks; I know we commonly refer to both as redshirting. I also understand that there will be a lot of odd injuries in practice that result in gaining the medical hardship.

I'm kinda curious how contested those medical hardships are by the NCAA. If Hilliard turns out to be our starter as a senior (and given his size and Les' tendency to like bruisers, it's possible), losing a year due to a single, meaningless negative carry would suck. And unless we have some injuries racking up in the backfield this season, I don't know how much he'd play at RB behind Ware/Ford/Blue right now anyway.
Not complaining about it, just curious. It may not matter anyway, as I've heard he may be the backup FB and see a lot of time this season. I guess his playing against Oregon might cement that.

Remember in '09 when Scott, Murphy, and Williams went down with injuries? Good to get RB's some PT in case one goes down - which will happen at some point.

It's after 4 years. If he redshirts, you're assuming he'll be here 5 years. But I think this conversation will be rendered moot, as I believe he'll get worked into the game plan more and more as the season progresses.

It's not like we're going to stop using him

If the talent is there then you use it. No sense in red-shirting KH, AT, JL.

He had a carry in the 1st quarter, not just late in the game.

Once again let't go over this again this season. I guess it's about that time of the year.

There's just been one game--Kenny will have plenty of time to contribute. But I was wondering if Terrence Magee will be redshirted, with the depth at RB?

pretty sure hilliard plays this year. lm may be getting him (a big power back) ready in case ware gets injured. ware's playing style is going to get him a lot of nicks and bruises if not injuries. pretty sure we will need hilliard at some point.
