Read an article today that discussed the benefits of starting the season off with a easy win so that the coach can suspend players for actions over the off season without hurting their season.

I really like starting off the season with a top team, but I cannot say I oppose the logic presented in the article.

I'd rather play a great team in week 2.

On the flip side...playing a strong OOC team will help the strength of schedule....and if you lose,...it's better to lose early.

I feel like there should be another reason for doing this. Such as a warm up game or getting another home game.

But there certainly are benefits, I wouldn't be opposed to going back to that.

I have been thinking about this alot myself. While it is nice to play a top program, we also have to endure 9 months of down time where anything can happen. Playing a cupcake in the opener and scheduling the big opponent for week 2 gives you only 6 days to worry about off-the-field actions.

Well, one good thing about having a tough opener is it focuses the team. From what we've heard they have. Been working harder than ever before to get ready.

But we still have the whole SEC West schedule ahead of us. This makes more sense for a team like Boise that doesn't play a hard conference schedule.

I'm not sure what article you're talking about but I've been against playing Oregon from the get-go. Even if the fight hadn't happened it's still dumb. NFL teams have four pre-season games to work out the kinks. Even high school teams play a jamboree. Why LSU has to play Oregon in Dallas is beyond me. Had we opened with Northwestern we could worked the kinks out with all the turbulance that's occured recently. Now we don't have that luxury.

Would they still be focused on OR if they opened with ULL or Tulane and had OR in week 2? I think they would pretty much overlook the 1st game and focus on game 2, same as they are now.

As Urban Meyer said while commentating the Oregon Spring Game, "It's almost impossible to get ready for Oregon's offense in 2-3 days which is basically all you have in the regular season. LSU is working on them NOW. They will be ready to play in that opener."

i too have been thinking about this a lot lately. Honestly, consider this even though it may sound absurd- if we (lsu football) took the initiative in begin playing or attempting to schedule top 25 ranked out of conference teams for every out of conference game. and i mean seriously analyzation. what do guys think the benefits would be. obviously, we all know the cons.

some ideas i have had to get the discussion going:
- [REVENUES/RECRUITING]LSU COULD become the most publicized team in all of college football creating more opportunity for higher revenues and/or creating another selling point for highly stouted RECRUITS

- TV exposure and all the perks that go along with this...

anyone else think this idea is completely absurd or the cons too far out weigh any benifits?
