We had our first losing season in a long while in '75. Nebraska was ranked pre-season #1 and we opened with then Sat night in TS. Game ended in a 6-6 tie. We almost won it near the end but Mike Conway missed a 40+ FG by a foot or so.
Many of the 70's games in TS are legend (OM in '70, ND in '71, OM in '72, USC '79 - none of these did I get to attend) but LSU-Nebraska seems to have flown under the radar.
As I recall this was among TS at its finest. Just wondering what others who were there thought.
I was at that game as a 10 year old. Vince Ferragamo was their quarterback but thats all I really remember...and I probably only remember that because I kept the program. I don't remember how loud it was but I remember I was sitting right next to my Dad. He is gone now but the memories are not. Take your kids to the games if you have them.
I was there. I remember a bit, but was so young. I actually remember walking out of the stadium the best, the crowd was yelling down the ramps. I remember Vince Ferragamo too. I remember my Dad telling me pre-game that NU was number one but that they had no idea what was coming. Nebraska was a national power. LSU was a regional team, as we were in those days, crazy cajuns with funy names with a great, physical style of play. Not much sizzle compared to those Big 8 teams but a LOT of crunch.
I was there as a 7 y/o and remember the crowd going crazy as the teams left the field at the end of the game. I didnt understand why everybody was so pumped about a tie.
I was in law school that season. A great game and I felt we outplayed them. Seems like the crowd (but maybe just the students) gave the team a standing ovation at the end of the game. I have been to a lot of big games but that one was special. We were a pretty big underdog and the team played their hearts out. Crowd wasn't as fired up as the USC crowd, though. I guess it was beause we had played Nebraska before. I remember that Nebraska brought a lot of people, all with their red stuff on.
What I remember most was how many Nebraska fans had traveled. Their fans were unlike the fans from most other teams we play regularly - very classy! As I recall the crowd was loud but not rabid, maybe the opposition had something to do with that.
Mostly it was a memorable night because the outcome was so unexpected. One of my favorite games ever! (Along with ND a couple of years earlier and Alabama 2010)
i remember game as an afternoon game, lsu big underdog....lsu good defense not much offense.. was exciting game because of close score...
lsu had lost confidence in 75 and carried over in 76 ...offense lacked scoring...
game was nothing compared to ole miss games in early 70's or notre dame ...usc..
the lsu teams in early 70's were good enough that with a little luck they could have been in a national champion game...by 1976 things were not the same
I was there....I was a freshman and it was my first game as a student...I got drunk on schnapps...the fourth quarter was exquisite....the big Neb guys were exhausted and we had a drive at the very end...Terry Robiskie was a superman and just barely missed a fg that would have won the game....those were the days when pledges had to reserve seats for active frat members...sweet memories
I was there and remember the crowd being extremely loud throughout the game. It was the opening game of the season and everyone had been pointing to this game all summer.
Nebraska was preseason #1 coming in and were very lucky to avoid the upset.
I also remember all the Cornhusker fans in red, there were a lot of them in the southeast corner.
Also, the biggest human being I ever saw in Tiger Stadium was the Husker's #75, OT Randy Poeschl. What a monster, and he was only a sophomore that year.
This was my first game as an incoming freshman. I had been in the stadium for many games growing up including Notre Dame. Tigers hung in with the Huskers, and sitting on the 45 yard line (the student section went from the 50 yd line around to the north stadium in those days), I thought at first, that Conway had made the FG. Crowd was good, atmosphere was good. What I remember, however, is that our LB who had a great game and blocked a FG, was arrested later that night after a bar room brawl in which someone was stabbed. Tragic event.
I've always been told that Mac made sure the turf grass was kept taller than normal for that game. The reason was that UN had a lot of speed & the taller grass was an advantage to LSU because it slowed down UN. I was also told by someone who followed the Tigers closely back then that their coach said he would never play @ LSU again.
I was a sophomore and in the student section. The crowd was loud and electric, but not the most I ever saw. (ND 1971 takes that honor - I was not at USC 79). Late afternoon start may have been a factor. It was the first game for a new Mike.
Domingue did knife someone after the game - a driver in traffic outside of a bar. He's reborn and a minister now, and he talks about it a bit on his web site. I don't have a link handy.
I don't know about the grass, but it is more likely that Nebraska had a size advantage than a speed advantage. LSU was very small in those days and Nebraska players were huge.
I was ushering as a Boy Scout for that game. Crowd was OK but not as good as '79 USC which I attended also. Just a good Saturday night TS crowd pulling for their team.
Thing I remember was an Advocate sports page article about the size of Nebraska's offensive line. They were the biggest in the nation in both total weight and average lineman weight. One player was slightly over 300 lbs. which seems funny today. The rest were in the 275-285 range.
I was there, 1st game as a freshman. Saving frat seats. Drunker than Cooter Brown off a fifth of Benchmark bourbon. Drank the whole thing with my date sitting outside the stadium from about 1 until 6, then stood up and almost passed out. The one memory I have is how awesome it was walking up the final ramp and coming out into Tiger Stadium. The noise, the lights, the band, the buzz--it was electric. I wish I could remember the game itself!
