So Nola announces they are gonna can their beer and all of a sudden Abita is now doing the same. The longer I live in Louisiana, the more I dislike the Abita machine.

No link, I'm on my phone and saw it on Facebook.

Tin Roof is going to cans as well... as usual Abita is reactionary instead of proactive, but I can't blame them for wanting to get some of their beer out there in cans.

not to defend Abita but canning has become one of the biggest recent trends in the micro-brew game. they are both just following what is an industry wide movement.

I think it is a great idea. Why you mad at Abita? They are just keeping ahead of the trend with cans right now. I hope that cans are here to stay and that bottles die a slow death.

Ehhh I don't really see anything wrong with this, per se. When Abita started, what 20 years ago, putting what was then called microbrewed beer in a glass bottle, was a sign that it is better than Big Box Brewing. Plus, initial cost set up for bottle is cheaper. So they did bottles and that shape of the bottle became part of their brand.

Now with craft brew exploding again, and the push for cans (cost, recyclable, cheaper to transport, better to carry, etc...), they are making the switch.

But havent they been canning light beer for a time now?

I don't think so. I wasn't aware they had the ability to can their beers, it certainly is not in their main brewery.

Seems to me Abita has done everything possible to slow the craft beer movement in Louisiana so they could remain top dog. While this is probably a smart move on their part, it seems very reactionary and another way to squeeze the smaller breweries.

Why?

I think they serve a good purpose... I'm amazed it took Abita this long.

No doubt I'll buy more of these now than I have in the past. But by the time other breweries catch up to canning I'll overlook them again. They need to come out with more, more special editions, more Selects, bottle some fun stuff and sell it for a premium.

Why, cans offer significant advantages over bottles.

1) No effect on taste since cans are now lined.
2) A much better seal allowing no oxygen in or out.
3) No light can penetrate a can.
4) Better portability (can bring to beach, tailgate and Mardi Gras, etc.).
5) Less messy and don't need a bottle opener. If you drop a can it doesn't break like a bottle does.

I have been over it many times.

Yes its the brewer's friend because it protects the beer from light etc..

But unless you can convince the vast majority of the population to pour the beer into a glass instead of drinking it out of the can you just presented to your customer an inferior beer (at least in comparison to the same beer out of a bottle) as it will impart aluminum flavoring into your beer while they drink.

Americans are just used to drinking shite beer out of cans so it doesnt matter.. But good quality beers in a can should be poured but people are not gonna do it.

Ah...

A) I don't really care about the vast majority of the population. They will keep drinking their BMC and be as happy as pigs in shite.
B) If I'm going someplace where glass is illegal, I'd rather drink an Abita or Tin Roof or NOLA out of the can than a BMC product. Even if it's not the ideal serving situation, it's still an improvement.

Every beer should be poured into a glass. Can, bottle, or draft.

Note does not apply if funneling.

Link? This has largely been done away with since they went to can liners.

canning beer

it's a novelty that you shouldn't leave bottling to go to. Nola has not bottled before (other than irish channel). So them having beers that needed special conditioning was a no brainer with the cans. Plus it's cheaper and more "green".

Abita doing the same is just being a copy cat to cut into the "tailgate and parade party" market. Nola would be the predominate choice for lots of parade goers since glass is technically not allowed on the routes.

I guess my opinion has more to do with brands that are not accepted as of yet.. Like NOLA and Tin Roof.

Many people have already tried Abita and other microbrews. But we all know what Nola brews and have tried it in a bottle or on tap. But if it were your first time trying the beer and it was straight from a can you have the potential to lose customers.

It like drinking a Belgian out of the bottle there is loads of differences between the flavors you get. There are many that I have had where I cant stand it in the bottle but pour it into a glass and its a great beer. Duval is one I know of that sucks if you drink out of the bottle.

Now if you are a brewery like Tin Roof I just feel right now you should make sure people are liking what you have served at its best and dont give people the opportunity to not like what you offer.
