nah. Your just being an arse now. The one downtown is very good.

Don's downtown had excellent gumbo. Those who have had it would probably agree. There, I said it.
My times there however are usually reserved for happy hour in the bar area, meaning half priced drinks and appetizers. It is what it is, and if their ten dollar huge arse seafood bouquet featuring fried crab fingers, bacon wrapped shrimp and oysters washed down with a half priced cold one doesn't sound appealing, then this place might not be for you.

The fried shrimp and crab claws are also excellent as are the homemade house dressing and the hushpuppies, at least to anyone who has normally functioning taste buds.
Can't speak for the rest of the food because I rarely vary. I used to order the shrimp en brochette from time to time with the butter for dipping. May have been garlic butter. Not excellent, but very good.

Not knocking Don's, but I always preferred the
chicken andouille gumbo at Charlie G's.

Cliff the bartender at Don's who's been there for 8 million years (realistically 40+ years) floats us complimentary hush puppies along with the half price apps. A couple of times I've had the $12 ribeye special on Tuesday. They ask what you want with your baked potato and serve it in dixie jello shot cups. The gals that dine there were probably hotties before the invention of electricity. Like I said, it is what it is, but they have some good gumbo.

Degas, I've always enjoyed the atmosphere and the fact that regulars are still there working and dining. Takes me back to my childhood days when my Dad would bring us those little plastic monkeys that held the olives in his martinis. I don't know what in the heck we did with those things other than covet them.

Don't tell me Dons is good. It's not. Their best asset is location.
The Don's on Johnston is part of a chain (you can find them in Gonzales and BR). The Don's downtown is independently owned and has a completely different look and menu.

Ah yes. The good old days when the sugar caddies at the tables actually held actual sugar, usually with pictures of boats or cars on the packets.
Posted on 7/21/11 at 6:11 pm to Degas
I forgot about those packets. Things sure have changed....

Congratulations. I've heard about the good eats in Lafayette, but I've never had the pleasure of visiting any of those places. Gonna make a point to do it some time soon.

I never knew Johnson's existed. Is Dwyers good? My wife is always eating there on her office days.
