I've passed by it a few times but never went it. After seeing the menu, I'll definitely be checking that out soon.

Well deserved.

Can believe they visited Randols, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. It's a tourist trap for the ages.

Prejeans would have been a much better choice.

Jolies is top notch.

I agree that Randol's is touristy, but I love going there. I've never had anything but a very good meal there and I enjoy the bands and watching the dancing. I think it's fun to go. Maybe I'm a tourist.

I ate at Prejean's a few months ago for the first time in a few years because I wrote it off. It was worse than the last time I ate there. I think the quality has diminished substantially. I used to like the crawfish bisque, but this one had very little crawfish flavor. I had the eggplant, shrimp and crap app. Used to enjoy that when they put good crabmeat on it. Tastes like they changed the sauce and there was one piece of eggplant and a little bit of flaked crabmeat on top. Even the shrimp had a strange flavor. None of the other 3 diners enjoyed their meals either, which is a good thing because they won't drag me there, again. Randol's surpasses Prejeans, for me, by miles.

Try the ginger and cane glazed shrimp app. The seafood gumbo is good. Dark roux with some depth and spicy. I like the crawfish bisque, but it's been a while since I've had it.

Here's a link to The Advertiser's full article that ran in today's paper:
Lafayette wins 'Best for Food' / USA Today, Rand McNally atlases will feature Hub City
In the interest of full disclosure, I did write that article.

I haven't been able to pick up a print copy of USA Today yet, but here's the info about Lafayette in today's edition and a link to the online article:
The five best small towns in America

Best for food

Lafayette, La.

Team that visited: Jim and Bonnie Parr (" The Fun Finders") of St. Petersburg, Fla.

What made it stand out: "At every meal, the main goal seemed to be introducing people to Cajun cooking and the history behind it," the Parrs say. "And we could work off the calories with zydeco dancing" at family-friendly restaurant/dance halls such as Randol's.

Don't miss: A lesson in how to make roux (a flour-and-oil mixture that's the basis of much Cajun cuisine) at The Accidental Chef, a convivial cooking school run by two cousins of Sicilian ancestry.

Biggest surprise: "True Cajun food is flavorful — but not overly spicy. Too much spice only covers the flavors of the food," the Parrs learned.

honestly, i live in lafayette, and i am a connoisseur, is really not the best- to say that it is is quite laughable.

seriously, compare the food you could get in lafayette to the food you can get in new orleans. that puts in perspective USA today's little contest.

but its good publicity for the city, which i do believe is on the rise.

I agree.

I ask any of you...........how many times have you been to Florida (awash with fresh seafood just like LA) and had the best dinner you've ever had?

Me: Never. I'm always a little disappointed, even frustrated. Every time. I keep thinking that fresh catch of the day grouper or mahi mahi is going to finally be spectacular. But it never is.

I come home to Lafayette and eat catfish that is better.

The contest was to find the "best small towns" in a handful of categories.

New Orleans is not a "small town."

What SMALL TOWNS have better food than Lafayette in your opinion?

Yeah, not really. Better food was number one on my list of things I was looking forward to when I moved away from Lafayette earlier this summer, and the food where I live now is much better. But hey, if you like the food in Lafayette, good for you.
