Did any of the 3 Manning’s ever really consider coming to LSU? Did LSU recruit them hard? (for the record, I view Manning’s as THE most overrated sports family ever, they are good, but 11 seasons of CF with one sec title, no nc, no Heisman’s and a sub .550 sec record as a family does not deserve 1/100th of the credit they get imo)
Overrated sports family? They have 2 starting NFL QBs, one is largely considered the best in the game right now (or one of) and the other.. well he's not But they have 2 superbowl rings in their family and who knows how many more they'll get?
I hate the mannings but they're not overrated.

Fuc the manning family. From No never showed Lsu any love. Then to top it off Eli refuses to sign with San Diego, at the same time Pat Tillman turns down millions to go die for his country! You wana go buy yor kid a manning jersey, your what's wrong with this country. Go get your kid a Pat Tillman jersey and learn a lesson about who heroes really are. I respect Peyon as a player but the rest of the family can go to he'll!
As for the other post, all 3 Mannings have been NFL starting QB's, don't think they are overrated. They didn't want to go to LSU, big deal. Don't act like they personally insulted you. They aren't Joe McKnight that was never coming here but dragged it out.

HERE WE GO.
To keep it on subject, while i hate Eli for personal reasons, to have two sons start for SEC teams, get drafted, start on NFL teams, and win Superbowls.... Not overrated.
And like people said, Archie moved down because he went to the Saints. Not everyone that loves the Saints, loves LSU see Saints board

I like how you use team achievements such as championships to judge those guys in college, nice.
And as for the heisman's, well, Peyton would have one if the heisman voting wasn't northernly biased.

I've heard this too - I was at LSU for the dark days that followed..... I'd love to know if this is true as well!
I was there at the time JPB (and I was a Raider in '89 and '90) - and I believe this story is true or, at the very least, Archer's people alleged this at the time. I'm not sure, but I believe Bob Broadhead (no fan of Joe Dean) said this as well.
That is the way the LSU AD was run at the time. We were fortunate to have had Pat Henry, Dale Brown and Skip Bertman already locked up. Joe Dean couldn't hire a quality coach if he had a "quality coach hiring machine".

Being bitter over why none of the Manning kids considered LSU strikes me as somewhat pathetic, at best.
And I'm not someone you could describe as a "Manning Fan" by any stretch.
Agree. It's ridiculous.

Was Steve Spurrier really waiting outside for an interview while Curley Hallman was being hired?
Spurrier wanted the job when Arnsperger hand-picked Archer to follow him. And, I believe Arnsberger took the Florida AD job and hired Spurrier.

I should have known better to think that a "sensitive" topic like mannings would not take over the thread..by overrated I mean they are thoughts of by many as better than they are IMO, I agree they are a great athletic family and that PM is one of best in current NFL and maybe in history, eli is a sb mvp and archie was very talented, I just think they are not as great as many seem to think, topic for another thread, but I dont think anyone is saying they are not great in many ways...

Fair enough Josh, but do you think PM having a .500 playoff record after 14 NFL years, AM having a 28% Winning % in NFL and all three not winning much in CF is not at least a part to be consdiered

A team accomplishment? No
Archie played on god awful teams by the way.
Also Peyton and Eli were fairly successful in college.

I don't know that a title or ring matters. I'm sure Dan Marino was sucked many times by many different women.

On Bert Jones, I've heard that. He and Cholly Mac butted heads though, so if he did say that, it was probably directed more at the coaching situation than the university.
On the Mannings, Peyton and Eli both gave LSU a look, but I don't believe either were ever in serious danger of wearing the P&G. We actually sat a few seats from Archie and Eli during the Kentucky game when Eli was taking visits. As others have said, being from NOLA doesn't make you an LSU fan, especially if your dad went to Ole Miss. Seriously, how many other schools have songs named "Archie Who?".
LSU did hire Mike Archer after Arnsparger left and Spurrier was a candidate. That was a wierd situation. The board was being pressured to hire Archer, but voted to open it up to other applicants. Spurrier was one of the applicants. Afthough they had opened it up, the players were pushing hard for Archer, so the board capitulated and elevated Archer to HC. It left a bad taste in Spurrier's mouth. If you want to blame the AD on that hire, blame him more for giving in to pressure from the players, not for the hire itself. Hindsight is always 20/20.

This. Shanahan and Spurrier were on the short list. They were working on board members at some event and reportedly met up and compared notes. They figured the job was already Archer's.
Hodson led a group of players, or was appointed to speak for the players, to Dean's office and, legend goes, either demanded or strongly urged that Archer be promoted. If it was close, that was the deciding factor.
Archer was not that bad of a coach. He was promoted at too young an age and the position overwhelmed him. He's often lumped in with Curley, unfairly in my opinion. I ask my fellow Ranters to consider this - Archer was elevated to the head coach position at LSU after the 1987 season. Archer is 14 weeks older than Les Miles and almost 2 years younger than Nick Saban.

1) Did Bert Jones really say the best part of his career at LSU was leaving?
Yes. Cholly Mac had him running the option at times, wouldn't you say the same thing?

2) Did any of the 3 Manning’s ever really consider coming to LSU?
F**k no

3) Did Mike Archer find out he was fired from the press and not Joe Dean?
Found out LSU had hired a "search firm". Basically same thing but he pushed at that point and they blew him out

4) After the 44-3 loss to Miami in 88, did Ruffin Rodrique really say that basically Miami knew they were playing against a great team?
He sure the frick did and it was downhill quick after that, just look at the record

That depends on who the competition is. Who are the other families? BTW John Elway only played on one winning (6-5) team. Would have been two, but he was on the losing end of that crazy Cal kick off return at the end of the game.

Wasn't sure about the Rodrigue quote, but I believe Stapuff. Whether he said it or not, things sure as shite went South for awhile after that.
