Because RTS is awesome, that's why. A RTS with RPG elements would be fantastic. That way you wouldn't have that clunky companion system.

Jesus Christ there are enough good RTSs out there without bastardizing every franchise in existence to give it a new setting.
And I say that as an RTS-fiend.
Next you'll want to make Zelda an RTS.

Yes, but like you said it's the bastard game of the franchise and it wasn't very good imo. RPG is the way to go with Fallout games.

Unless Obsidian is doing another one, I think it'll probably be a little while.
Bethesda will likely do fallout 4 with the new engine from skyrim. I wouldn't be surprised if the Bethesda dev team takes things back over to the east coast again. The Commonwealth (Massachusetts) maybe?
The dudes working on NV seemed to be more knowledgeable about the story over on the west coast (used a lot of story elements that never saw the light of day with the scrapped Interplay version of Fallout 3) and wasn't that team composed of some people who worked on the original 2? Youd think they'd be the ones to continue things over on that side of the country. Bethesda got things going on the eastern portion of the country with the capital wasteland and I see that as what they bring to the table.

I'd like to see them progress the storyline if the overall fallout "universe" a bit more. They seem to like major metropolitan areas so NYC seems feasible. Though I agree that I don't want them messing with the game, I'd like for them t roll the dice and try something in a different format. Maybe something final fantasy style.

think command & conquer.
and I'm against any serious deviations from the core concept that has been established in 3 and NV. I'm all for improvements, but I like the core gameplay just fine.
The thought of Fallout being styled like Final Fantasy makes me gag. Recent entries have completely destroyed my faith in that series.
