SC's 2008 defense was even better.

Well yeah, but that's a whole other recruiting class and team...I was saying if some of 2004 SC D stuck around for another year...Texas doesn't beat that team at all and almost everyone else including nebraska 95, miami 01 and the usual suspects in debates.

I think 2002 Miami and 2005 USC would be a great game. Wouldn't be shocked if Miami won the majority of the time if they played 10.

Saban loves going into a shell once a game is in hand. The game was not as close as the final score implied it to be. I never thought there was a real chance that Bama would lose that game.

2003 OU is my #1 tied with 05 USC.

What they did to Texas that year was down right medieval.

Since USC was forced to vacate '04, who would be considered the runner up: Auburn or Oklahoma?

game was never played. The food you ate during the game was not food. The crap you took--did not happen.

Most likely a lot of points...sort of like USC/Texas but easier gained. People sometime forget that USC/Texas despite the high scoring was the crispest, every inch contested, hardest earned points I've seen in a major game. Both teams were playing at such a high level which you rarely seen in these types of games.

Did that team really stink or were we just fooled into thinking they stunk because of Miami?

Whenever I heard a Miami 2001 - greatest ever because of what they did to Nebraska, I always remember, yeah but look what Colorado DID to Nebraska a few weeks earlier - and look what Oregon did to Colorado!

That Miami team had great talent sure but their road to the title was hardly memorable to be properly evaluated.

I think you got the first two right. I think you have Texas 2009 much too low. That was a fluke injury.

Pretty sure their offense didn't score a single point in that game.

7. 2010 Oregon-

Definitely could have won the game.

Say what you want about the 2007 national title, but lsu's two crystal balls look exactly the same as alabama's one.

05 USC, 02 Miami, 08 Oklahoma are way above all the others IMO. Those were some great teams that lost in some memorable title games. Its still shocking to me that Miami lost to OSU. That team to me is as good as any title team in the BCS era. Great thread Bench

alabama has two crystal balls.

Although I'm not sure why the "crystal ball" thing is such a catchphrase on this site. who gives a frick what the trophy looks like in any given time period.

It's short hand for - the only trophy that matters. Used to differentiate in a disparaging manner the AP trophy which is decidedly not a crystal ball.

Visually it does just the opposite - opulent and ostentatious; the crystal ball screams financial collusion compared to what the winner of a non-mythical NCAA sanctioned playoff would get:

A wooden plank.

Oh that 05 OSU team still makes me mad...

I wouldn't put the OSU teams in the top 5 either. They were too 1 sided on the ball, neither was able to field a good D and O (like 05 and 09 were able to).

I still vow that 05 OSU team by years end was the best in the country (I still have nightmares of that Texas game)

I always hear from Buckeye fans that OSU was playing the best football at the end of the year in 2005. I have no idea what that assumption is based on.

Here's the reasons most OSU fans would say that:

1. OSU outplayed Texas for 3 quarters in the game in the Shoe. Taking absolutely nothing away from VY (they won the game of course) but OSU outplayed them.

2. PSU was a top 5 team that year and OSU played like crap and almost beat them at their house.

3. That ND team that OSU put up 614 yards of offense up on and shut down on O for much of the game was the same team that was an illegal bush push team from beating USC.

4. Then you look at the talent on the D from 05, adding that to the O from 06. OSU had 3 guys from that D drafted in the first round in that draft.

Basically, 05 OSU was 06 LSU, which many LSU fans say was the best team in the country
