That is sad. I also hadn't thought of the fact that those animals negotiating that high water might also have to contend with things like barbed wire. It's a whole different kind of obstacle when it's hidden under water.

They are wild animals. This area natuarally is supposed to flood like this yearly. They'll be ok

They know how to survive a lot better than we do.

It's a lot harder when A) they haven't been through this in a long while B) their habitat has been significantly changed by barbed wire, dams, roads, etc.
But I'm sure most will preserve.

Wild animals have a way of surviving. I remember hearing that the number of wild animals killed in the tsunami(Indian ocean) was almost 0%. Survival of the fittest I guess.

Kind of; their area that has been artificially formed and restricted by levees and fences in the first place.

The problem is not with the mature deer. You have to realize that the Does are dropping fawns this time of year and when they drop them and have to flee to higher ground the fawns cant always make it. The does will end up leaving the fawns which will result in them dieing. Also, dont be surprise if there is no deer season in much of the state next season.

This is true, but will help the deer due to the fact they will have to compete for food once they move outside the spillway.

I know where we hunt South of Morgan City in the marsh, the deer are crossing the Intracoastal to to levees where they will end up dropping their fawns and when the water goes back down the mature deer will go back to the marsh and the fawns will be left behind, they wont be able to make it back across......

quote:Yeah, I don't think so. Doesn't the basin have a late rut? The gestation period of deer is about seven months. Assuming breeding is done in mid-December, the fawns will be born in mid-July. Even if the area has an early November rut, there should be no fawns born yet.
