Hollywood Casino Parking lot and River merge

Here are some pictures from our drive down river road today from the Hollywood Casino Parking lot (which is merging with the River) all the way down to Gardere. Not the most awesome quality pictures as we were driving and there were massive amounts of cop and other officials that weren't allowing people to stop. No worries - we weren't gonna go and disturb the levee's and cause issues. Just went for a drive.
the parking lot of the Hollywood Casino is now part of the Mississippi river. Hard to see in this picture (they were being very cautious and making people take pictures quickly) but there really isn't land between those wet areas - the river was flowing over and that's all mud and soggyness.
More river in the Hollywood Casino parking lot. This picture was taken while driving on the street from the parking lot that leads to the new underpass that they just finished building. river is in the far ground of the picture and obviously overtaking the hollywood casino parking lot
extra protection at the low point in the levee downtown
Sand boil underneath the new Mississippi river bridge.
very large sand boil that's been sand bagged on river road almost to Gardere coming from downtown. There was also water on the road here , water in the ditch across the street, and a temporary "high water" sign on the side of the road.
(edited to add pictures here instead of in a link)

Hey nice pics the casino parking lot looks like it has a lot more water in it compared to when it flooded in 2008/09 (can't remember the year)

Sand boils are small seepages of water through levees is common and not cause for alarm. However, under stress like this, the water is under enough pressure that it can bring soil with it. Soil washed away by the sand boil represents a weakening of the levee.
When a levee systems sees increasing numbers of sand boils, or several sand boils in a small area, it can be an indication that the levee is in danger of breaching.
They occurr every year and several occurr on LSU's campus yearly.

And we have enough people to monitor this situation, right??? (Yes, that is with sarcasm I learned from the OT ...)
God this really sucks.
God this really sucks.

Hey rhap,
Thanks for sharing but you may want to dump those pics in a photobucket account since the link to your FB one shows your name.

The problem now is that we are seeing an increasing number of sand boils and we are a week away from crest. The water will probably stay high for a month or so and thats cause for concern.

thanks - I just embedded the images here - hope that works better. :)

Do they just use sandbags as a temporary relief for sand boils?
It seems there are a good number of sand boils popping up just on river road between the casinos and gardere
And just six days until the crest..

The fourth pic is kinda funny. Did they really need to put down orange cones?

The primary way of fighting back against a sand boil is sandbagging.
Sandbagging a few feet around the site confines the water seeping through to form a small pond above the leak. That pond exerts downward force back on the levee, equalizing the hydraulic pressure and slowing or stopping the flow of water through the levee. It acts as a counterbalance with water on both sides of the levee.

So would the rise in water add more pressure or would it be the same?

Yes unfortunately they do. I used to work at the casino and people see casino and get sue happy etc. I still think the pic is funny though

Any sand boil on a levee is cause for worry. Any boil that is pushing out clear water is less of a worry than one pushing out dirty water. The dirtier the water that comes out, the more sediment the water is eroding out along the channel it's moving through.

this thread is old i realize, but i wanted to point out that the "sand boil" in this photo is not that at all--it is a layer of protection on the levee to protect against the water coming from above. that spot is right beneath a downspout on the bridge.
i guess i'll introduce myself here as well, i'm a longtime lurker here...the OT lounge is the best place i've found to catch breaking local news and commentary on current events. oh and it's damn entertaining too!
