What happened to complete games?

I don't get it, give the kid a chance to get a complete game. He did a hell of a job pitching tonight and just cause its the 9th innings you take him out. I wish they would give kids a chance to get a complete game, if a runner gets on then bring in a closer and he can get a real save! Tonight the kid deserved to the chance for a complete game against #1 in the country and came away with nothing.

Last week mccune was pitching and had no runs against him in 6 innings and when he was pulled we got behind 4-3 and were lucky to win the game.
I guess I don't understand the importance of pitch counts or the potential bad effects it could have on someone's arm.
Anyone care to 'splain it to me?

Anybody know when was the last time an LSU pitcher threw a complete game?

Alsup threw a CG in the SEC tournament last year. It was a 7 inning game though I think.

McCune was a hgh school pitcher last season
7 innings is a high school complete game
this is his 5th college game
any more questions?

It's a very long season and these kids have never played this many games in one season. By throwing a kid too much too early will kill most arms and he will not be effective by the end of the season when he is really needed. Mainieri will always protect his pitchers arms. I love that about him, he see the big picture even if some of our fans don't.

U have to pull McCune there but IMO not Eades. Especially bc he found his stuff and was in rhythm with 2 K's.
Then you pull him for Ott.
Though if he doesn't get pulled then everyone is bitching about Ott staying in the bullpen.
Can't win.

I can't believe CPM took Eades out. He was looking pretty good to me.

The pussification of America extends to baseball as well.

That's what I was wondering. The dude was on fire and you messed his mojo all up. I understand you want your best closer to try and beat the #1 team in the country. But I think you needed to go with who was in rhythm that time. Hopefully we'll take that and pull out a win tomorrow.

Early in the season. Don't want to stretch a guy to far until it really counts.
Don't want to get a reputation as a college coach of wearing kids arms out. It hurts the recruiting of pitchers.
You build the kids up for the late season tournaments.

I agree with this. I would have stayed with Eades.
But he is also trying to build Ott's confidence back up to.
Historically Matty has shut those games down. Two batters in a row he made mistakes on two strike pitches.

Put another way ... ever since we let Matty Ott go 7 innnings last year, he's never been the same pitcher.
No reason to risk the rest of the season by extending a pitcher an extra 1-3 innings for one single victory. It's just not worth it.
Not to mention, you've got to establish a bullpen. If we don't do it now, we won't have any chance to win it all later in the season. A win might seem uber-important in the moment, but in the longrun we're trying to build a successful season (not just get one win), and starting pitching alone is not gonna get it done, we need guys in the bullpen we can trust to keep a lead.

I was a little surprised when eades came out in the 8th, mccune was in complete control at that point. does anybody know the pitch count for mccune? either way, I think we see ott in the 9th regardless. damn new bats, with the old bats that hr would've died at the track.

I had the pleasure of talking with Matty during fall ball, and after such a great summer in the Cape, I don't think Matty lacks confidence. What we need to do is look at his great freshman year. When a batter had two strikes on him, Matty finished him off with a slider. Look at last nights' 9th inning again. With two strikes on each batter a fast ball was thrown. why the difference? sure makes for a different outcome.

Whitey Ford just happened to be a pro, not a 19 year old. A pitcher's arm is not fully developed until around the age of 25. Plus, people tend to forget how the game has changed over the years. Most pitchers can't get by throwing all the junk and 85 mph fastballs guys used to throw in that era. Bats are lighter (not to mention aluminum in this case), parks are smaller, the strike zone has shrunk, and the mound has been lowered. Sorry but it's not the 40's or 50's anymore.
