Give your "surprise" draft pick...

56. Titus Young
People are focusing on our potentially getting another RB. Easily the position with the smoothest transition from college to the pros. What isn't getting much attention is that not only is Moore a free agent, but Meachem and Colston only have one year remaining, Devery is on the bubble (I could see a bounceback year, though), and WRs typically take 2 years to develop. I suspect Titus would immediately step in as our return guy, get spot duty early on at WR, and if Bush is cut, potentially get some touches at RB. Not saying he would get nearly as much RB duty as Bush, but he did run the ball at Boise(47 carries, 360 yards, 7.66 avg in career).
Again, the main benefit is avoiding a situation where you have a fallback plan at WR if negotiations don't go well with any of our current guys. You DON'T want to rely on a rookie coming in the 2012 season and getting a lot of playing time.
I'm 90% sure we retain Strief, so I think we'll jump on a guard if there's someone we really like in the 3rd round. We'll address the DE position and one or both the LB/DT, but I could see yet another unexpected draft that contains more offensive players than defensive (WR, OG, fullback, ignoring the yet to be released compensatory picks).

at #56 I'd be plenty happy with Young value-wise. A big plus is that if no Reggie he could replace him and Roby in the kick return game.
I'll thinkolate on it more. My initial big surprise is an OT at #24. If they don't wanna pay Bushrod and if Brown hasn't panned out to their liking (a lotta if's), then, say a #2-3 ranked OT on their board was around I could see it

56. Randall Cobb
He is a versatile player who saw playing time at QB,WR,RB. He threw for five TD's, ran for 22 scores, and caught 13 TD's in his career. Ran a 4.46 forty time at the combine. Also was a solid return man.

If they extend Strief (from what I can tell, 2nd most attached player to the city behind Brees), Payton will be his gambling self and let Bushrod walk (unless he comes really cheap) in favor of Brown. Strief has gotten enough work at LT for them to know that he at least doesn't suck, and will likely give you identical productivity to Bushrod. An excellent backup plan to both tackle positions. Then you've got your top 3 OTs making around a combined $6m per year for the next three years ($4m per year less than the franchise tag).

I like Cobb, but that deep threat was gone last season, and Meachem didn't really appear as fast as his 40 implies. Young would do that for us.

Everybody is hating on Bushrod when Stinch is a pretty big problem also.
The deep threat might have seemed absent at the time because of some poor OL play.

Not to mention Brees was abusing pain meds and signing too many books.

Pick #72
Ahmad Black S.S. UF
Thrill, if Titus Young is there at #56 no doubt they will pick this guy up.

Don't forget that Payton's playcalling was off because he was focused on moving to Dallas all season.

wussy, pretty hard to have a 3rd Rd surprise, ya gotta do better than that
how bout a 2nd Rd safety? DeAndre McDaniel? Isn't Black a FS? He's both small and slow

What about Clay Matthews little brother is he anything like his bro?

Well see... thats a surprise.
I know not a big reach but more of a "another secondary pick" kinda surprise.
I do like the kid. High character always around the ball and knows the game well.

long hair and same last name
highest grade for him prolly is 3rd Rd, most more like 4th or 5th. Could be a good ST guy that could eventually earn a job one day

Ok cool just thought it might be in his blood to play like his brother.

Definitely agree. Stintch was as bad, if not worse, than Bushrod for most of the season. I could definitely see us going OT in the upper half of the draft.I just feel bad for all the people who are going to be let down when we dont pick front 7 in the first few rounds.
Posted on 3/13/11 at 7:31 pm to mm2316
Rumor is Stinky was hurt pretty badly all of last season and played through pain. Sports hernia I believe. He's not exactly old, so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt given how well he'd been playing the previous 3 or so years.
