Went there for lunch yesterday with a business associate. I had the Steak and Ale, a meat pie of sorts which was pretty much some steak tips with mushrooms and onions in a brown gravy and some beer, served in a cup with a puff pastry on top. Sounded interesting enough, and pretty simple concept. Wasn't terrible or anything, but some salt and pepper would have been nice along with browning the steak tips prior to slow cooking it, and could have had just a few more steak tips. Gravy was quite obviously something on the order of what you might expect from a McCormick's gravy, but the puff pastry was browned well, and the mashed potatoes they served on the side was good.
My business associate had a chicken sandwich with avocados and a side of french fries. She was meh on the sandwich, but the issue that got to her and myself was they served the fries on the plate luke warm, and when she asked to get some fresh fries served hot the server obliged and came back in no less than 3-5 minutes with the same fries on the plate which were clearly nuked. Pretty chicken shite if you ask me. On the positive, the fries at least had salt and pepper and seasoned well. Avocado's looked nice and chicken looked adequately prepared. Couldn't attest to the quality of the bread, but she wasn't too impressed.
Nice beer selection though, and so that in and of itself will I'm sure bring people in the door.

Your description of the meat pie sounds horrific.

I was trying very hard to be gentle, because I know my reputation precedes me.
It didn't make me gag or anything, but it certainly wasn't very much to write home about. The gravy thing was to be expected I guess.

I was thinking about going there for lunch, you may have diverted me.

That place is extremely hit or miss.
I went the night of the Auburn-Oregon game and the fries were probably the best I've ever had in my life. 2 other occasions either sucked or were very average.
I did like the fish and chicken though.

I think I may have heard of this place before. Not sure, though.

I couldve told you their "pies" were going to be rather forgettable, but the question I don't have an answer to yet is : Are their fish'n'chips worth a shite? That's the only reason I'd go out there.

I'm surprised as hell that this thread hasn't been anchored yet.

Why the hell do they keep getting anchored?
Oh and the Chicken and Chips are like Calendars FWIW...good stuff.

We went anyway, it's close by and the rain kept up from wanting to go far.
First off, I'm not a beer drinker, so I got a glass of iced tea, it tasted like iced coffee. Maybe I'm crazy so I asked my wife to taste it, she said it tastes like coffee, I presume someone brewed tea in the coffee maker. Not a big problem, it was pretty good iced coffee/tea.
They were in a brunch/lunch mode so both menus were available, that was a nice option. I ordered the corned beef hash with 2 sunny side up eggs for $9 and a biscuit for $1, wife got the shepherd's pie for $9. The waitress was very helpful and attentive, not to mention attractive, and we didn't have to wait long for her to bring out the food.
My corned beef hash was a large portion, the 2 eggs on top were cooked perfectly, firm but still runny. The potatoes & onions were browned very well, the corned beef was spicy and the slices were browned with a slight crisp, the dish was very well presented. My biscuit was large, light and golden, likely pre-fab but good, my only complaint was that they didn't serve butter with it.
My wife's shepherd pie was very tasty, it is served in a small baking dish which does a good job of holding everything together, I had a few bites and it was all that dish could be. It is meant to be a little bland, but the ground meat and potatoes, covered with cheddar was excellent.
Since we just had iced teas the bill was on the light side, $30 included a 20% tip. This place is a very nice addition to the BR dining scene, it is an option away from our standard Louisiana fried seafood & burgers at a very reasonable price. MY wife and I could very easily split the hash and no one would have gone away hungry.
I don't doubt that a restaurant as new as this is a little inconsistent, they need some time to get there act together and learn to do thinks like brew tea in the tea maker, but we'll be back.

Neither I nor Brag could finish our fries last time we went because it was like the cap on the salt shaker fell off when they salted them or something. They were sooooo salty.
Might have just been that night though because I don't remember that being an issue my first two times.

One thing I think is turning out to be pretty consistent in this thread, and that's their inconsistency apparently. It sounds to me like perhaps they have one fairly strong player and one not so much, and it depends on the shift you catch. Not sure, and maybe I go back to get some fish and chips to see if maybe I can catch them on a better day. Shame though, because I did like the menu. It was interesting, and didn't seem to be rocket science, just good bar food concepts. The execution was lacking on my trip though. Nothing that overcomeable through. Just finish the race.

Exact same for me.
And that's a lot coming from someone who salts her chip basket and salsa cup between bites at Mexican joints
