How to juggle a) Offer from Company X and b) Pending interview with Company Y

...and knowing that if an offer was made from Company Y, you'd take that one over Company X? I havent called Company X back yet cause I'm not sure what to say. Any advice from anyone who has been through this predicament? Do I go the safe route and accept the one I've been offered or gamble and risk losing it to see whats behind door #2 (i.e. results from interview with Company Y)?

If company Y is your dream job tell company X you are interviewing with company Y. Use this to leverage the two companies against each other. In my experience it is never the best move to settle for a job.

I did that. You need to understand that even after the interview with Company Y, you will then need a few more weeks to hear back from them. It didn't exactly work out for me, I haven't landed the company Y one, and I eventually turned down the company X one because of time (I also flat out didn't like the job). But I am also in a flexible position where I had some time to find the right fit. Some people don't have that flexibility.

I currently do have a job, so I'm not desperate or anything...but obviously have been interviewing for something else/better. I was ready to accept a job from Company X, but it took them a while to get back to me, so I continued to interview in the meantime. And now I've been through 1 interview with Company Y, and a 2nd was requested, but wont be for another 2 weeks. Really not sure what to do here...

I was in this predicament coming out of school. I asked Company X for an extension, then I called Company Y. I told Company Y the situation and that it was my dream job but could not leave an offer in hand for a hopeful offer. Company Y fast-tracked the process and got me an official offer in time. If I remember correctly, they accelerated my second interview to a few days after I called.

I did the same thing. It worked out great. Just be upfront and honest about when you need to make a decision and everyone will understand.

Just make sure you know the ex date of offers. That being said, an offer on the table can be leverage for the offer firm to speed up their selection process or increase the compensation. I would just be open w/ both firms about the offers you presently have.

Something like this happened to me. Granted I'm a student and I'm just now starting out, so it may be different considerations, but my offer was withdrawn when they realized there was another firm in the picture. It was surprising and not fun.

How long until your interview with company Y?

This is my main problem- the 2nd round isnt for another 2 weeks. And then who knows if there is another process after that. And Company X is already behind the 8-ball in getting someone in, and have already upped their offer to me. I have a feeling any attempt to stall longer on that one will essentially end it. I'm pretty much leaning towards accepting. Its too risky trying to wait and see on Company Y.

Definitely do not tell Company X the reason for your extension. If it were me hiring and somebody told me this, I would pull the offer and call the next comparable candidate (unless you are on an entirely different level or something).
Your best bet is to plead your case to Company Y as much as possible. Call the person who interviewed you and get his candid opinion on your chances. Ultimately you might decide to take a risk and wait on Company Y, but the interviewer should have a good "unofficial" idea of your chances.
Good luck. It sounds like a stressful and difficult decision either way.

from a hiring executive- a lot depends on the pay grade level of the job- the lower the pay grade the less patient a company may be- this is an employers market not an employees market.
What profession are you in? how many years of experience? what do you bring to the table that none of your competitors would bring?
The last question is very well the most important. I would be willing to wait on an outstanding candidate but all things being equal if you are not head and shoulders above the competition you are on thin ice ,,,in this market

I had this happen when I took my previous job. I interviewed at 3 companies within a week of each other, got called back on second interviews for 2 and an offer from one. I immediately dropped one of the callbacks as I wasn't interested and told the other I had an offer in hand but really wanted to explore their opportunity as they were the much larger company. In the meantime I also told the company that offered the circumstance and they ended up raising their offer. I never made it to the 2nd interview
