Whole Foods, mini-review

I consider myself a pretty savvy shopper, I know what most things I buy cost and where to get the best prices for the quality offered. On a rainy Sunday we decided to go see what WF had that we liked. I've been maybe 5 or 6 times previously, usually looking for a special ingredient for a dish (boneless quail type stuff), my wife had never set foot in one. The location keeps it off our radar screen.
First off, a lot of people had the same idea, it was pretty crowded, since the aisles are much narrower than a typical store, it was hard to get around. The layout is confusing, not sure what they are trying to accomplish with this.
Ridiculously expensive:
Produce. For instance a container of baby spinach was $5.99, Sam's, also organic is $3.99. A few other instances, but I didn't see any bargains.
Meats/Seafood. You are paying dearly for the organic labels here. Obviously a lot of people think it's worth it.
Pretty good deal: The bulk stuff. We loaded up on a few things, snacks, nuts, some spices.
Bakery Items. The breads are very reasonable, a 22 oz loaf of marble rye, $2.25.
From what I have seen in other cities, we have pretty lousy grocery stores here, WF offers a lot of things you can't get anyplace else, a large selections of cheeses, prepared hot meals, great deli. Although the take and eat pizza slices were very sparsely topped and low in the flavor quotient.
I think most of the appeal here is trendy rather than savvy. Healthy foods are important, but I get around that by avoiding processed foods. Southside produce and Fresh Pickins will always be my 'go to' vegetable places and Sam's my butcher shop. Calandro's, Calvin's, Red Stick Spice, Maxwell's Market also get some of my business, but none of those have enough selection for all my needs. I prefer local guys when I can.
Next time I go to WF it will be in the middle of a weekday when the hoards are working.

Thanks for the review that is.

It really does make you realize how bad our grocery stores are for the most part.
I mostly get beer, cheese, produce, and a few pre-pared foods from WF . No way could I afford to shop there all the time. One day when I learn to cook seafood properly, I will probably start getting a few items from that dept. too.
Waiting for the first dumbass to post in this thread to say that you can get everything from WF at Wal-mart for double the price.

You won't find any steal, but you can get some things at a very reasonable price. I recently got some blueberries from there for pretty cheap.

I used to get natural, nitrate-free lunch-meat from there and yes, it was pretty damn expensive. Eventually, the both Hormel and Oscar Mayer came out with natural lunch-meat which the regular grocery stores began carrying so I starting buying that stuff since it was much more reasonable. I've never gotten anything from their meat deli. I do want to try something from there to see what it tastes like.

Agree.

I think the take and bake pizzas are very good. They could use a few more options, though.
If you ever get a chance, try their Berry Chantilly cake - it is amazing.

I go there for the bread. It completes me.

The one think my cheap wife loves from there is the sliced roasted turkey. It is unreal how much better it taste that most of the crap out there.

I have never shopped there, but I have looked around. The produce is way more expensive, but damn it is MUCH better looking than any produce at the other groceries.
I'm surprised you didn't like the pizza. Many on here say it is the best of all of the pizza places.

You know what you're really paying for? Not being around the people that go to Wal-Mart. That's really what you're paying for and for some, that's worth it. I would rather pay a premium on some stuff to avoid Wal-Mart because I can't stand that place. And there noodle bowls are really good.

Be thankful for your grocery stores. Stores in Nola (and Baton Rouge, too) are far superior to anything in Arkansas. Even the WF in Little Rock was a joke. I relish every trip I make to Rouse's now that I live here.

I refuse to shop at Wal Mart
When I go to Whole Foods I end up going somewhere else for half of what I need due to price.
Baton Rouge needs a Rouses.

You obviously have no sense of humor, the laugh per aisle ratio is much higher at WalMart, but I never shop there for other reasons. Terrible meats & produce, not much selection of brands.
I hate overpaying, I don't care if I get to shop with the Harvard faculty, I expect value.

I don't know what you are doing with that bread that it 'completes' you, but you're supposed to just eat it.

They sell ground lamb (7 a pound) at the WF near me, so that's clutch. The Ribeyes were 9.99 a pound and they were pretty good, so I won't knock them on their meats.
Everything else is expensive, and i agree totally on the produce. I don't do the organic stuff ever.

I normally find the produce expensive there, but you're right about the blueberry special. I bought a carton on blueberries yesterday that were double the size of the ones at Winn DIxie for half the price.

I love Whole Foods but we REALLY need a friggin Rouses here. WF is a niche grocery store for the most part. Lot's of great stuff there. Rouses is like a really awesome grocery store with a little of WF mixed in. Thanks for the review.

I usually go to Whole Foods for things like cheese and bakery items, plus I like their olive bar. My brother loves their bulk stuff too. They do have a lot of interesting and unique things in their meat/fish department (like specialty sausages).
This is one of the best cakes I've ever had.

Went there last night to get a variety of items for dinner. Had the spicy chicken noodle bowl (good but not great), 4 slices of pizza (very good), feta-artichoke patty (not good), roast beef/goat cheese panini (not good). The pizza by far was the best thing.

Publix is working there way in that direction. The only thing standing between you and Publix is Mississippi.

I see that people rave about the pizza all the time, that was why we got 4 slices, 2 to eat at the store, 2 for home. I looks great, the big pieces could be models for any food magazine, beautiful rustic crust, almost artistic ingredient layout. However, all 4 pieces had 1"-1.5" border with zero toppings, that's a lot of bare crust acreage, underneath the cheese and meats there was not much tomato sauce, a major flavor component. I'll take the Papa Murphy mega-topping pizzas any day, diet does not allow me much pizza, so when I get some I want it loaded.
