I was curious as to who you all thought would be considered some of the most sympathetic movie villians in movie history. I'll start:
Brigadier General Francis X. Hummel, USMC in The Rock
Brigadier General Francis X. Hummel, USMC in The Rock

Gary Oldman in Air Force One. Watch the movie again, from his point of view. Everything he accuses the the president of is absolutely true.
Also, to live up to my name, Shere Khan in The Jungle Book is 100% justified.

I almost wanted to cheer for those evil blue people trying to stop human economic progress. But I didn't.

I was going to say Vader.
But Hummel was a really good character, Ed Harris really made that movie.

Got to go with the Wicked Witch of the West. All she really wanted was property that was already her's and maybe a little revenge for someone murdering her sister.

would Hummel even really be considered a villain?

Means he was a pussy IMO.
Mr. White shot his boss over what was right.
And killed Mr. Blonde for torturing a cop.

I always feel weird about movies that make me want the bad guy to win.
Like in American Gangster. Although I knew the story, I was rooting for Denzel the whole time. Also Depp in Public Enemies.

I think Darth Vader is the very definition of this subject
I'd also throw in King Kong though he may not count
