I have state farm for both Car and House. I would recommend getting the same person for car and house most of the time b/c you get a discount on each for having the other.

Availability of Homeowners Insurance is partially dependent on where you live.

Further South that you go the smaller the pool of insurance companies.

Need to be concerned with the financial status of the Insurance Company. A.M. Best and Company rates Insurance Companies. Check with them or ask an Agent for a rating.

Other thing to be concerned about are "wind" or "named storm" deductibles.

Normally it is beneficial to put your Auto and Homeowners Insurance with the same company. You will receive a discount.

You might also check with the Department of Insurance regarding complaints about the Insurance Company.

I lived in coastal Louisiana after Katrina and Gustav- State Farm was by far the best company to be with- my neighbors had just about everything else- while they were fighting to get and adjuster out- State Farm sent me an adjuster, repaired my home, put on a new roof and wrote me a check

No need for this. AIG was AA+ rated at one point, and we all know what happened to them. Plain and simple, just make sure to ask the agent if the carrier is admitted by the state, if they are, no worries.

FWIW, Bankers is B+ rated and they insure a multitude of properties in South LA.

YOu can be with a great company but your agent is slashing off coverages to make your price look wonderful.

You can be with a lesser rated company but have all sorts of coverages.

Call independent agents, get quotes, ask them to explain coverage differences, and you will have decisions to make as to what coverages you want to pay for.

I second ASI. Just changed home and car from Safeco to them. Saved a bunch.

I have had Farm Bureau and then Hanover the last 10 years. No problems with either.

If you are going to rely on the Guaranty Fund to pay a Homeowners Loss you are asking for trouble.

First depending on their writings in the state their payouts can be reduced.

Second you will be relying on the Insurance Department (State of Louisiana) to adjust the claim and I doubt that it will be very timely.

A.I.G. was rated A+ XV by A.M. Best. Chartis the same company is rated A+XV.

I would not want my home to be insured by a B+ rated company.
