Craig James is a Saint

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised after watching 30 for 30 that Craig James didn't take money to play at SMU.
In fact it was encouraging to note that he actually almost didn't sign with SMU because he heard they were paying players and he had to check it out thoroughly to make sure it was on the up and up before he signed.
it was only because he was in love that he went to SMU because his future wife was going there.
I'm glad there is still men like this of integrity.

I watched the same show, but you don't know whether or not he was like everyone else and took money based on the clips from the show.

A pussy payment is as good as cash.

They tried to make Craig James look innocent. I doubt he was though.

That's what I gathered from it, too. I wonder why ESPN would do that for one of its higher profile employees...

well he is employed by the same company that ran the show....
every player at SMU at the time knew what was going on....
but.... look back at the details of a LA tailback the committed or signed a "conference" letter of intent with a La school about the same time.. and ended up at a school that got robbed by SMU as soon as the "favor" was made

I understand their reasoning, I'm not trying to say I don't see why. I'm just saying, I think it's full of shite.

the better question is why did they have a TV crew in his family home when he was whining to the coach about how Dickerson got the Trans Am?

It comprimises the integrity of the documentary format. In fact This would have been perfect had they left out the James/Musberger opining. SHould have just been the local reporters who actually covered the scene. Lost some credibility with Musberger chiming in from his perch way up high. He had nothing to do with it. May as well have Beano cooke chime in.

Me no comprende.
But, I do remember during that time frame that running back Harvey Williams out of Hempstead, Texas was set to go to Texas A&M surprised everyone on signing day when he picked LSU after previously stating that he would attend A&M. He said that one of his classmates was singing the A&M fight song to him and he didn't like it, so he went to LSU. After hearing Ron Meyer casually explain away some of his own recruits, "18 year old kids can change their mind from day to day", it puts the Harvey Williams switch in a different light.

ESPN is not the producer of these shows, FWIW.

Now I follow.
If Craig James loved SMU so much, why didn't his whiny-brat son go there instead of Texas Tech?

I'm not blaming ESPN, its the film maker's fault but ultimately these docs are commissioned by ESPN so its not out of the realm they infuenced who the talking heads were. James was not really speaking much as a player and observer as he was more as a College Football Analyst.

I dvr'd it. Bout to watch in a lil bit. Can't wait. Was always interested in the SMU story. Now I can see how good they really were with the highlights.

NCAA athletics was a joke in the 80's
SMU got caught and in order to minimize the damage they continued making payments which ultimately led to the death penalty. Of course, when you start going out of state for players, those guys will be the first to turn when things don't work out.
All the SW conference schools were no different and outside of Vandy the SEC has been just as bad, including LSU.

is it really some riddle you have to keep secret on a message board 35 years later?
