Gavin Webster transferring from SLU (baseball)

Per today's Hammond Daily Star he is giving up football and leaving Southeastern for a bigger baseball program. Has anyone seen him play? Is he good enough to get a look from LSU?

Have fun with your balloons and mini muffins
And did Webster see the field this year for SLU at all?

I don't think he played but I would have to check their site. But then again I'm on my phone and you're apparently just laying around on your bum wheel and on your computer so you could just check it.
The article says he will transfer to a juco to play this Spring.

There was quite a bit of hand-wringing on this board and others last year about why LSU wouldn't offer the kid or why he wasn't getting looks from bigger schools than SLU.
Looks like the "experts" got this one right. Maybe he was telling people he wasn't that interested in football last year, or that baseball was his real love?

He's a great athlete, but he's pretty raw in his baseball tools. If he focuses on one sport for the next 2-3 years no doubt he could have potential.
Don't see LSU picking him up.

I used to play against him back in high school. Had a pretty good arm and he can definitely play college baseball.

Thanks for the info since he's already playing in college.

He redshirted this year at South Eastern according to the SE coach who talked at the QB club a few weeks ago. He had good things to say aobut him (but of course he was speaking to a local audience so you have to take that into account).
I'm surprised he's giving up football. He was a big part of Lutcher's offensive success over the past few years. He showed great football smarts and had enough physical tools to amass tons of numbers. To me, watching the games it always seemed like he was the pivotal part of the Webster/Landry combination (I know at the college level the measurables become primary but I really thought the kid could make it as a college QB somewhere).

I was hoping he would play in the wildcat. This sucks!

Looks like he's taking the Gerald Watson route. Hope it works out better for him than it did Watson

Anyone who has enough information on Gavin and doesn't think he has the potential to compete on the major college baseball level is a baseball idiot. I've seen him hit HR's that could bring rain. Can he hit a curve ball? Yes...out of the park at times. Can he hit for average? Lead his HS team his junior year(a team loaded with talent - 5 kids in college ball). Average dropped last year due to his attempting to beef up his power numbers and chasing pitches up in the zone (the scouts were saying they liked him as a power guy). Definitely has some refining to do, but his combination of speed and power is rare. He's a power guy that can squeeze out infield singles. And his 1st cousin played for over a decade in the majors and has two world championship rings. Loves baseball and would have given up football in a heartbeat if the right offer had been on the table. If you knew his whole story, you would realize how special of a person and athlete he is.

I do know the whole story.. and he is overcoming some obstacles just to play at that the level he has.
all things being equal - he got an awful lot of exposure - it's not like he was at Lutheran high and nobody saw him play.
I wish him the best - just don't think it is gonna happen.

Do tell.
I have been told that he didn't know the playbook and that is why he didn't see the field in football at SLU. I call BS.

If not LSU, then another big school will pick him up provided he gets any kind of decent instruction in JUCO. Or else he'll get drafted and enter the farm leagues. Either way, he's actually showing his maturity by his candid evaluation of his own future. It's definitely in baseball. His dream out of HS was to either play major college baseball or enter the minors. Regardless of how it turns out, you can't blame him for following his dream. I know enough to not doubt him. He got the magic stick!

Kid is a thug. I believe he got thrown out of the Nicholls vs SLU football game because he pushed a referee down. That might have been the reason he is concentrating on baseball. They got tired of his thuggish ways at SLU.
You can get drafted in baseball from any school including Miss Valley Technical institute. If you can play then the big league will find you. I am sure SLU gets a couple kids drafted every year.
