Dear Tiger Fan,

This week we announced a change in game day parking procedures for LSU home football games. Beginning next year, there will be a charge to park in most lots west of Highland Road on the LSU campus on football game days in order to offset financial losses caused by budget cuts to the university and to provide additional services to fans.
These are difficult financial times for the university. The financial problems for higher education in Louisiana are well documented. The financial difficulties for the university also affect the athletic department. During the most recent mid-year budget cut for instance, the athletic department was required to take on an additional $1.4 million in costs for which we had not budgeted in the current year. The athletic department also pays all scholarship costs including both resident and non-resident fees and these fees are projected to increase at least 10 percent every year over the next several years.

In addition, we intend to invest funds back into the tailgating experience. As tailgating in the heart of campus has grown in recent years, so have the demands on clean-up costs, restroom facilities and maintenance of the appearance of campus for the other six days of the week.

The tailgating experience at LSU is second to none, and that is why we structured this new policy so that fans can continue to park in the same place and tailgate with the same family and friends they have for years. If we had made these lots reserved paid parking, we would have had to distribute permits based on the LSU Priority Point System. But with a first-come, first-served and game-to-game policy, fans can tailgate just as they have in the past. This change in policy does not affect the areas east of Highland Road and the Kirby Smith parking lot so fans will still be provided the opportunity to have free parking while attending the game.

Yes, there are logistics to work out between now and next football season. LSU has not sold game-to-game parking in the past, but other schools have done it for many years. So we will study their policies and adapt them to our campus to ensure that traffic flows smoothly and that any change to the tailgating experience is minimized.

There are nearly ten months to go before the 2011 season opener, but we felt it was important to communicate this change to you now. We will be distributing flyers on campus this weekend to vehicles in the affected lots, and you can find more information at LSUsports.net/2011parking.

As always, we welcome your comments at athletics@lsu.edu. Unfortunately we cannot answer every e-mail we receive, but please be assured they are all read.

Geaux Tigers!

See. He's giving us plenty of time to invest and gain the extra $40/game. Too bad we'll be taxed more heavily on it.

Why isnt 100% of the money not going to the University? Its their land not the AD's.

LIKE??? Isnt there already money in each ticket going to the items he lists?

Has it?? Can we have proof of this? There have been over 100k people tailgating on campus as long as I have been alive. If anything tailgating has spread out away from the middle of campus as the golf course was moves and more parking was put in.

BTW why is it that you can never find a non overflowing trash can near the PM? Alabama game there were over 50 trash cans just stacked up. Why doest he AD complain about litter and in areas where you cannot tailgate they dont even provide the trash cans that they have.

Dear Joe:

Mind if I call you Joe? Great.

Since we're on a first-name basis (you can call me liquid), mind if I have your parking spot for the game? I'm sure you're too busy for such mundane activity as a college football game. What with balancing the university budget and all.

I won't drop my go-cup on your parking spot. Promise. And I won't pee on your name on the curb. Trust me.

Regards,

liquid rabbit

I understand the principles behing the reasoning for the increase but when times are good why don't we get a refund(i am joking). I want to see a letter stating how great everything is and the Athletic Department brought in record profits so as a token of our thanks here is a check for your seat licenses or parking pass. (I know it will never happen lol it's just they use bad economy to raise price on everything but yet joe public who is part of the bad economy has to pay more)

Let's translate this into non-business, non-PC language shall we?

"Every year, more and more people show up on campus, who don't give a shite about campus, because they never set foot in a classroom at LSU, or didn't care that it's an institution of higher learning, but instead just came to town because they were looking for the biggest and best party. They showed up, ran rough shod over the campus and its facilities, and left campus covered in tons of trash, just like throwing the Mickey D's bag out of your car window at a stop sign.

You want to treat campus like it's just a party? Heeeeeeeeeeeeere's your cover charge.

Have a great day."

Can anyone elaborate on this?

Or does Joe think an extra 3 dozen port-o-cans = additional fan "services"?

they will lose money due to lack of concession sales and at the book store and Mike's gift shop. Very short sighted decision. Absolute no consideration for 2d and 3d order effects.

Should we ask if the parking fees will be eliminated once the budget cuts are reinstated?

I wonder how many hours each week "Joe" spends looking at revenue streams for other universities?
" If they can charge for it so will we"
