Have you ever turned down a position that would ...

..have resulted in a significant pay increase?
If so, what was the deal breaker?

Yes. I thought the company was on shaky financial ground so I turned them down.
They declared bankruptcy about 18 months after I walked away from their offer.

Depending on how backended your deal would have been, you could argue it wasn't really an increase being offered - it was an unkeepable promise of an increase.

I took a new job for significantly less money than my (then) current job. It was a lifestyle choice.

actually twice.
I turned down more money on one job b.c it was in alpharetta, and frick, I am not living in the burbs of atlanta. Maybe in the city but not driving 45 mins so I can work in a suburban shithole. It was about 20% more than the other offer I had out of grad school. I am glad I didnt live in alpharetta but the company actually did very well.
Another time, i turned down about 15% more. I didn't want to move. I thought I could work living in denver and commutting to cali but in the end they said no.

I turned down 2 and both for the same reason. Would have to move to a big city in the North. Don't like big cities and don't like cold weather.

It was a 50% increase in salary + a piece of ownership in the company with no cash outlay.
I did due diligence on the company as if it were one of my loan customers and learned it was teetering. I knew my ownership share would be worthless soon.
I was correct. They filed for chapter 11 about 18 months later and ultimately chapter 7 about 4 months after that.
The interesting thing was when the owner asked me my reasons for declining his offer and I told him exactly why I was turning him down, he just shrugged and said 'OK.' He knew what was about to happen, too. Bringing me on was his last best hope to save his company.
I didn't want to work that hard for only a small piece of the company so I waited and started my own company. The pay increase was even nicer....

I turned down a $10K increase to go to a smaller company that paid even less than I was originally making b/c I felt I needed the experience earlier in my career. Turned out it was the right move since I wouldn't have my current job w/out experience I had.

I turned down a $35K bonus when I was getting out of the military. Would have had to stay in 3 more years I think.

Alpharetta, a shithole? You can't be serious.
I guess if you don't like large wooded lots, excellent public schools (and of course privates schools), one hour away from the Blue Ridge Mountains, great outdoor activities, then I guess it blows.
Sorry to highjack the thread. I had to ask the question.

turned down a huge raise to return to my previous employer. I left because I hated the bastards.Wasnt enough money in the world to get me back

Yeah, would have been very lucrative but the wife would have become unemployed and so my life would have become miserable.
Also, would have gone from being self employed to having a boss again. I'd rather work for myself and have a good bit of free time than be paid really well and be back in the rat race.

I'm an IT guy - the only competent one for a pretty big company. I wanted to finish my degree at LSU so I told them I was cutting back hours. They offered me a $28,000/year increase to stay full-time. Hopefully getting a degree in software engineering will outweigh that loss. It was tough, though. Especially being so young and having such a nice salary without a degree.

I had a great job with a company, took another job with a cut in pay. Payed off in the long run.

Wow... I don't know that I could walk away from that.
