NEW ORLEANS — It wasn't the biggest crowd that the Southern Miss football team has brought to the Louisiana Superdome, but the Golden Eagles definitely had an advantage in number of fans.
Approximately 5,500 Southern Miss fans made the short trip south to watch USM beat Tulane 46-30 Saturday afternoon.
It was mostly a quiet atmosphere inside the cavernous Superdome with a showing of approximately 3,000 Tulane fans.
But the USM fans were definitely the louder group.
"I knew there would be a lot of fans that would come down because they always make the trip," USM head coach Larry Fedora said. "They do a great job and they were by far the only noise that was in the stadium. We appreciate them being here, no doubt about it."
.
"We knew in this atmosphere, that it was going to be tough," Fedora said. "I don't know if people realize it, but it's tough to play when there's no atmosphere. A big part of the game of football is emotion and getting excited. It's hard to do that when there's nothing out there."

It's really got to suck playing in such a large stadium with nobody in it.
Probably really disheartening.

They had a lot of factors working against them on Saturday. Their game was on local tv, they played at the same time as the LSU/Bama game, and they aren't good.

Like they'd make .500 if there was an atmosphere.

honestly, and im a tulane grad, Tulane football is sad man. i know that they dont want to give up the program, but without pumping some serious money into that program, nothing is going to change.

They should really end the football program and focus on basketball and baseball. They could actually be competitive in those 2 sports.

I mentioned on here that Tulane should play more games at Tad Gormely but it wasn't taken very well.
FYI Wallace Wade Stadium (Duke) is essentially Tad Gormely

They can't man. Not NCAA qualified.

They could take their rental costs for the Superdome and put it into refurbishing Tad Gormely.

I'm guessing things like locker rooms, media space, etc?

35000 seats I believe.
that's incorrect
the Kibbie Dome (Idaho's stadium) seats 16k and is the smallest FBS stadium

They could be competitive in all of them if the administration really cared, but the President is not really concerned with wins and losses.
ETA: They probably wouldnt be abled to remain in C-USA if they got rid of football.

The old Tulane Stadium was a hell of a place to watch games and had atmosphere around that campus. I was actually a Tulane fan as a kid because I had great times there. Demolishing it and moving the games to the Dome was huge mistake.
